thanks everyone. i ended up getting back the crockpot. i traded my ex for a big cooler. i put in some lucks canned kidney beans, onions, baby beets, and apples. added a little water. i have no idea how this will end up tasting. i will probably add some herbs later (i see thyme and sage around). and greens if i can find some.

Sounds tasty anyhow... good luck with the rest of the plan.

And...sounds like you might've been out of the game awhile. Beans are never a good date food. Depending on the after supper entertainment, for low activity, a steak and potato is good. For high activity a light supper like grilled chicken salad or fish are safer alternatives.

Brett

Right, run her off with beets and beans:laughing: You know what they say about making an impression:D

I had this salad at a friends home not long ago, very tasty and much fresher tasting than crockpot fixings. Maybe you can use it--if there is a second date. :D

Orange-Marinated Bean Salad
from cookbook: 1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes by Sue Spitler
with variations by the Gellers

6 servings (about 2/3 C each)

1 ½ C cooked, dried adzuki beans (we used)
or you can use 1 can (15 oz.)

1 ½ C edamame (frozen, not in pods)
(recipe called for 1 can red kidney beans)

1 C thinly sliced cabbage

1/3 C thinly sliced green onions (scallions) and tops

1 small yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced

¼ C sliced celery

¼ C cubed carrot

salt and white pepper to taste

Toss with the following dressing.

Orange Dressing

1/3 C orange juice

¼ C white wine vinegar

2 T olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 T finely chopped parsley

2 t grated orange rind

Mix all ingredients and refrigerate until serving time. (We put the dressing on the salad hours before serving to absorb the flavors.)

What reason did you give the ex for wanting/needing the crockpot over the cooler?

Hopefully the "date" went well. And considering it's late in the afternoon of the day after the date and you haven't posted......

thats kind of what i had in mind. anyway the date occurs in a little while from now. the stuff in the crockpot looks and smells pretty good. i am 64 and have been doing farm work all day and am pretty beat. the woman in question is about 40. she and i flirt a lot. time to find out whats going on.
my ex has a food related business that doesn't involve crockpots but does use coolers. she doesn't care what i do with whom (at least I don't think she cares).

Cry-sake, randy41....I have been cooking with crock pots for over 35 years and I am near your age....jeeze.....beans and beets.....I have people over for dinner frequently and they usually rave about my cooking, be it beef, pork, chicken, vegetarian....last night I baked chicken in the oven and tonight I am grilling sirloins...how is it that a guy your age has not had experience with cooking?
