I suspect all of us have had experience with bad car salesmen, but I consider that to be a problem with the dealer instead of the individual salesman. Does the dealer train sales people or just hire anyone on a straight commission basis? As for asking what size payment you want . . . well, I don't think my brother would ever ask that when he was a car salesman, but he did have me set up a little spreadsheet for his old Apple computer for such things. He said he actually had customers come in who would buy any new car on the lot as long as the payments weren't more than whatever figure they gave him.

But yes, if the saleman knows his products, that's a big plus.

Interesting that several of you complain about know-nothing newby sales personnel. That's what I look for when I'm vehicle shopping.

Almost bought a Mazda MX-5 weekend before last, but ended up with a 2008 model 335i coupe stick-shift instead.

What gets me is the salesman doesn't know jack about the car but boy does he know what it's worth. You'll offer him your price and he balks at you like you just tried to rob the place and comes back with "oh no there's no way I can sell it for that!". Oh really because 5 mins ago you didn't know what engine it had in it but now you know the price? The car salesman I can usually deal with, it's the sales managers that I can't stand. You talk about a shady crooked bunch! They've cost dealerships more lost sales with me then any lowly salesman has. I've even had salesman chase me down in the parking lot apologizing to me and begging me to come back because the sale they thought they had wrapped up just got blown up by their finance manager trying to pull a fast one.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your post. How would a know-nothing newby sales person influence your buying a BMW and not a Mazda?

The objective of the salesmen is to sell you a car for maximum profit. If he can steer you to a model with a large profit margin he will. If he can get you to lease (where they make big money) he will. They don't have any interest in satisfying your needs or treating you fairly.

My last two purchases, the negotiating price took longest. 2-3 trips to see "The MANAGER". I swear they just go in back and shoot the breeze with another salesman. And most of them wouldn't know an A arm from a forearm. Some tractor salesmen are the same. They don't know GPM or PSI numbers.

Of course many tractor salespeople don't know what GPM is...now, GPS they can tell you about.... The man who sold me my tractor back in 2002 was just great, he knew his product, didn't try to BS me or upsell me to a bigger tractor, didn't ask about a service contract, was straightforward and 100% honest...didn't mess around with the numbers, made everything clear from the beginning...you know that old saying about trusting a salesman enough to make a handshake deal? Well, that was how capable he was, and I really was sorry when he left the business.

Huh? I'm confused.
"BUT people you I would not sell you are car or truck." -? What does this mean ? We should see you, but you wouldn't sell us a car or truck? So why should we see you?

Thanks for the info. By the way, many of my coworkers are right handed and my wife is right handed. Thought you like to know as long as we're sharing info.
