I went shopping for a new truck this past week and found out the usual guy I deal with had left. Ugh.
The first thing out of the new guys mouth was a What do you owe on your 2011?
I said, a What does that have to do with anything? I told him I wanted the exact same truck with the exception of no dual paint but with a heavier payload. He prices it but says he left the dual paint in cuz it was just easier to build that way. Huh? You're building it from scratch, build it the way you want! What a putz.

They ask you how much you owe so they can lowball you on your trade-in. If the guy I deal with buying my Chevy trucks ever leaves I might just start walking.

I have no problems with sales persons. I buy used,, even my company vehicles are bought used. I know what my needs are b-4 I buy. I make an offer and , it they don't take the offer, I move on. I don't have all day to buy vehicles

I had a guy I bought a couple of trucks from, but the dealership got sold, and I got the newby salesperson. The worst sales guy I ever met was at the local tractor dealer, back in the mid 80's. I should have bought a tractor then, but the sales guy was the worst I've ever seen. Spent the whole time bitching about his employees, the town, and everything in sight. And they had the old fashioned, small town thinking - I was buying parts for a tractor I was working on, and they wanted a 10% premium for using a credit card!! I didn't have a check on me, although I don't know if that would be accepted, as I wasn't a local, so I had to go to a ATM to get cash. A lot of these small town merchants went out of biz for a reason, they treated their customers, especially somebody they didn't know, like crap.

I think post number 6 summed things up pretty good.

Respectfully disagree there, because this one doesn't give a flying flip about cup holders....

this is probably true ... and good for her.

but the sales person's "usual" female client is not this type ... and they sell 'em the creature comforts ...

ever notice they home in on the "wife" when a couple go shopping ? ( unless the husband puts a stop to it real quick )

sell 'em the extended warranty, fabric protector, prepaid oil changes, the lovely two tone teal with matching interior .... how lovely it will look in the driveway.....

jatoguy said "even if he spouted off the specs...." YEAH, RIGHT!!!!! I bet 95% of the morons trying to sell cars and trucks don't even KNOW THE SPECS..... And to me they are not really salespeople, they are ORDER TAKERS, about one step up from those who ask: "Do you want to supersize that.....?"

There are good electricians, plumbers, roofers and many other trades out there and yes car salesman. The good ones stay busy and you have to put effort into finding one, usually not at big box stores or big car dealers.
Savings can run 10% to 20% for your efforts. It took me 2 weeks to buy my 2013 3500 saved about 8K. When I bought wife new Kia it was done and over with in about 20 minutes. Time = money
I also hate it when they start talking about how much of a payment per month. A 30 K car will pay a much smaller commission that a 70 K one.
You get what you pay for .

If I had done my studying about the exact options I wanted, why bother expecting the salesman to know off the top of his head all the numbers. With all the permutations and combinations of engine, tranny, rear axle ratios, tires, suspensions, etc. It would be far better for the guy to look up the correct number than to give you his best estimate. GVWR, load capabilities can vary from one truck year model to the next.

If I asked you what the mean free path of the copper in your wiring was, would you know?

Just tell him you know what you want and are shopping for the best price. If he can't deliver, leave. There is no reason for disrespect because someone doesn't have hundreds of different numbers memorized.

If they start asking what I owe on mine, or a monthly payment crap, I tell them to stick to the price of what I'm looking at.

That always peeved me when they don't tell you a price, only so much a month like that is what most people today look at. Some of us do not live month to month, paycheck to paycheck with half their income going toward paying for their status symbol car payment.
I agree 100% gary. Most car/truck advertisements around here just state monthly payments no cash price.I also see a trend in advertising you deserve this, what the heck is that about.IMHO you don,t deserve anything unless you can afford it.
