Interesting reading thanks for the link
Milking robots are fairly common in my part of the world, and automated feeding starts to come for the full. GPS also comes slowly by. The drones will not be common for a long time

I know a guy who installed a computerized irrigation system. It runs off of moisture sensors, and each line has it's own microprocessor. It delivers exactly the right amount of moisture to the crop, and runs day or night. No wasted water, which he has to pay for.

I was talking to a farmer the other day and he was explaining how sophisticated the gps systems are already.

If you have a triangular field and plant a row along the angled side, when you start planting the straight rows and meet the angled row, it will turn off the planter boxes one at a time so you don't overlap planting.

They also take soil samples at different points in the field and log them by gps, then when the sprayer comes it will automatically adjust the spraying patterns at different points in the field.

Many of you probably already knew this, but I was impressed. I thought the gps just steered the tractor.

I would sure hate to have to set down and convert each binary number to decimal by hand and look it up in and ascii chart:laughing:

OH wait! we have a computer!.. They just love to do mundane tasks like this!

I think the aerial "drones" (really just RC craft) are coming faster than you might think. The new generation of computer-controlled multirotors are dead simple to fly, even by relatively un-trained amateurs. They are incredibly useful for aerial spotting and monitoring. In my line of work, we sometimes need to rent a bucket truck or boom lift to check sight-lines for elevated microwave links, or to inspect installation locations for antennas on buildings. This typically runs something like $500 a day. For the price of three or four day's rental, I can buy a multirotor with a camera and do all of that. There are people using multirotors for inspecting jungle canopy cover, for aerial mapping, for tracking wildlife, etc... They really are going to be a game-changer in so many ways.
