Redneck,
A come-a-long will be my backup plan. Thanks

Instead of a come-a-long, try one of these.

The leverage stays the same, no matter how much rope you use.

While a come-along makes sense, it's one more piece of junk to have to store someplace until you are tired of it being in the way and leave it home when you need it.

Harbor Freight has winches for under $30. I have a couple of them.

I can't weld

I finally started welding a couple of years ago and taught myself. It's a great ability to have, there are so many small things that I can take care of now in a few minutes (and some bigger ones too.) I should have started years ago.

Xfaxman,
That looks interesting. I will check HD to see what it looks like.

Here is mine, with a short rope and a longer one if I need it. I keep it in the truck fenderwell storage box.

Here is the winch on my car trailer. It is removable and will fit a 2'' trailer hitch.

I'll get a picture of the winch on my utility trailer tomorrow. I had a hand winch I was going to put on it but it was easier to put a electric winch on it. The handle on the hand winch I had was long and complicated things.

Thanks Roger. That's a nice set-up but may be overkill for a lawnmower hauler. Do you have it on a winch post as was discussed above?

Norman,

The upright for the winch mount on the car trailer is 2x2 box tubing.

I took some pictures of my utility trailer winch setup today.

With this setup you can use anything that will hook into a 2" receiver. I have a ball that I can haul latch a wood splitter on to haul. (Yes, the ball mount is bent. A guy ran into me with truck with a snow plow on bent it. This is all I use it for.)

You said you had a boat winch. Does it have a strap on it or a cable? I had a strap hand winch on a car trailer and it did not work good. The strap would get all messed up/ twist over if you could not pull straight on it. I traded it to a guy for a hand winch with a cable on it. Even if you go with a hand winch I still recommend you make it removable that way you can take it off and keep it out of the weather.

I got the 2'' receiver portion at harbor freight. ATV Hitch Adapter

Roger,
Thanks for the photos. I like the idea of using a 2" receiver to make the winch removable. My winch is for cable.

No problem. Good luck with your project.
