1964 Ford 2000 134 ci 4 cyl gas
I need some troubleshooting advice. New clean fuel, carburetor leaks a bit, air intake hose just falls off the carb, spark plugs look okay, tach does not work.

Problem: tractor starts ok but loses power after a few minutes and eventually sputters out when in gear. She will come back to life when I depress the clutch. I ordered a service manual and plan on trouble shooting the problem when I get it. I am the 3rd owner, previous owner recommended a new carb but before I spend $200+ on a carb I was wondering if you all knew of some things I could check.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Respectfully,

John

Make sure that you have adequate fuel delivery to the carb. It's not uncommon to have a clogged tank outlet, or clogged fuel filter if you have one.

Make sure that you have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, the color of lightning. Wouldn't hurt to check the initial timing and the distributor advance function.

Carbs that are just dirty don't generally need replacment, they need cleaning.

As above and make sure you check any rubber fuel lines as they degrade over time and I once found a moth in the fuel tank that would once in a while settle over the fuel outlet hole in the fuel tank. Took a while to figure that one out! I've also seen rubber fuel line separate inside and the inside rubber collapses and closes off fuel flow while the outside looks fine.

I'm going out to the land/tractor this Thursday. I will check:
1. fuel delivery to the carb to include a. fuel tank for debris clogging outlet hole b. rubber fuel lines c. fuel filter
2. verify spark, may replace plugs as well.

Thank you gentlemen, I will update on Friday.

Update...I cleaned the fuel tank, blew out the metal fuel line, cleaned the air cleaner, replaced hose from air cleaner to carb...same problem. Next time I go out to land I will check the spark and tinker with the carb adjustment screws. Any other ideas, besides buying a new tractor? Which I am considering (mahindra 4025).

You know before you take everything apart I've had good luck with just turning the idle and load mixture screws in all the way. Just gently seat them all the way in and turn them back out to where they were. What this does is clean the jets without taking the carb apart.

It works! I went out to adjust carb and she now runs. I also checked the spark and all 4 cylinders are getting spark. I have another question though, when I checked the spark the engine sputtered when I pulled out the wire connecting the 1st(closest to driver), 2nd and 3rd spark plug to distributor but the 4th cylinder (closest to the front) there was no change in the sound of the engine. Is this a symptom of something?

Also, one more question, there seems to be quite a bit of white smoke coming off the engine block...what might this mean?

Thanks in advance.

Something is wrong with that cylinder. You could swap spark plugs and see if it follows the plug. Beyond that look at the inside of the distributor cap to see if that terminal is burned or flaked off. Could also be your wire to that spark plug. Beyond that it could valves?

White smoke, steam or exhaust? Where on the block?

ditto.. if pulling 1 plug wire causes no effect.. but the other 3 make it sputter.. it's running on 3 cyls.

also.. #1 is by the rad, and #4 is by you.

fire order is 1-2-4-3

pull the plug and see if it is fouled.

as said you can swap the plug to another cyl and see if kills that cyl and the other one runs again.
