Making money with land

Lots of assumptions on this post. Just because someone intends to make money with their crop does not exclude them from being farmers. Also does not make a difference where they get their power grid, generators, solar. Really doesn't' matter how old the person is either. They grow plants to make a living. You would be surprised that legitimate companies grow pot all over the country. Heck even universities like Mississippi State grow pot for the government. None of those people are drug dealers. They are employees of a farm or in the MSU case students. .

If you choose to exclude any indoor farming that is your choice but plenty of things are grown indoors these days, not just pot.

Give me a break. :banghead:

Nowhere did I say that making money excludes you from being a farmer. Nowhere. I said it shouldn't be your ONLY concern. Where I come from, farmers care for the land under their stewardship in addition to the balance of their bank accounts.

So, where are the assumptions in my post. I didn't say that's how everybody grows it, and addressed in an earlier post that the particular crop in question can indeed be farmed. I was just getting the point across that I think you can grow plants without being a farmer.

Speaking of assumptions, what on earth do you mean about it not mattering where the power comes from?? How would you like it if your neighbors burned diesel in generators day in day out and occasionally spilled some in your creek while they were at it. Never heard of spilling power from the grid, have you?

Lastly I didn't say pot shouldn't be grown indoors, nor anything else for that matter. Just that it ain't what I call farming if neither sunshine, nor soil is involved. "Growing"? Sure. "Farming"? Not in my book.

Your argument addresses neither the topic at hand, nor my post specifically in a way that makes any sense.

Tom, you've already asked me that. I don't claim to be some authority on farming, but to me, no, hydroponically growing vegetables without the sun or soil doesn't feel like farming. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, but to me, farming means more than just producing a crop. It means being a steward of your crop, your land, and the environment. But again, that's just me.

What do you think, Tom? Is a 23 year old growing dope in a warehouse powered by diesel generators with no regard for anything but profit a farmer? Or is he just a drug dealer?

Actually I did not ask that question before.

I know an oyster farmer and a fish farmer. They both have floating systems and no soil is involved. Are they not farmers? My point is there are many diverse ways of farming, not just under the sun in traditional soil.

He is a drug dealer and a farmer. In Colorado and Washington he could be a legal drug dealer.

So by your definition are these people farming?

Sorry, looked like the same question to me.

I hadn't thought about "farming" the ocean. Interesting question, though. I'd have to learn more about those operations to make a judgment. I won't dispute that I may have a narrow viewpoint of what's considered farming. You should see how limited my perspective is for what I consider good farming.;)

No offense guys, but is the definition of a farmer really that important?:banghead:

You might get flamed for that on a farmer forum like TBN.

It is when dope growers walk around calling themselves farmers. Some of them might give those of us scratching in the dirt for a living a bad name.

Ha Ha, you might be right. I have never heard the subject so heatedly discussed around any of the farmers I know.

So, what's the difference between a farmer and a rancher?

:)

I would say that a rancher raises grazing livestock, usually herds of cattle or sheep. I don't believe there are oyster ranchers or pot ranchers. But don't hold me to that. One could make the argument that oysters graze the water. But I haven't seen any with legs that could be herded.
