Thanks for the commiseration on elderly parents guys. I hate to think what it will be like when the boomer generation hits our 80's by the millions. I feel sorry for our kids already.

Sharon at home says there was a mass emergence of Japanese beetles yesterday, the yard was shimmering. They were so thick she whacked bunches with a shovel, then read online you shouldn't do that as the females release their pheromones when crushed which brings more beetles. I guess I start some milky spore applications this fall. We've always had a few around but nothing like she described.

Guys, Those of you with parents that have dementia/memory issues. Dad had Alzheimer last 4 1/2 of his life, had to be in a home about 3 years. With Dad, symptoms were so uneven, ie could from fairly functional to barely able to speak then recover later. Attention span was often a clue for a change. Dad never did forget who took the car keys (the only thing he did not forget) for as long as he could still talk. Had him checked for driving skills after he got lost several times, and that's when the keys (and car) got yanked. It is never easy.

7 inches in one day? wow....
David, with 101 inches so far this year, could you cistern all the water you need without a well? Sort of like a battery pack, larger cistern is better.
and your next project could be setting up a small waterfall on your property from the overflow rain driving a miniature hydroelectric power plant.
you could do it...

hmmm, something tells me you already have water tanks, a few chapters back...

I did make it to the river. My cousins own the 1/2 mile of river front just north of the park, and there is a good looking beach on their land that I use. I swim down to the boat ramp and walk back upriver. I swam 32 minutes today, but it took longer than planned. By the time I had lunch and got cleaned up, it was time to go to work. There was no time to shower. But I had just got out of the river, so I shouldn't stink. My hair on the other hand........

Be well all,

Now Larro, don't you worry about tiny critters getting at you? You know, like that one that bores through your foot and works its way into your brain?
or snakes. Or flesh eating amoeba.
not exactly the crystal clear waters of the Bahamas...but I do like that beach.

water like that, if I can't see in there, not sure I want to be in there...
but Im sure millions of kids have survived that water just fine.

What a way to start the morning.

Did the usual...fed the birds, made coffee, took the dog for a hike while the coffee was brewing. Came in to find coffee all over the counter. Yep, call the wagon for me...I forgot to put the carafe onto the hot plate under the drip. So the coffee and grounds flow over and under, seeking like a magnet everything on the counter it can find. Thankfully I had only made half a pot. Well, on the bright side, the counter, etc, got a very thorough cleaning this morning.

Worst part is that this was a brand new type of coffee that my wife picked up yesterday for us to try. And now that I am having my first cup, it sure is tasty and the coffeemaker still works.

74 going to 90 and I'm overjoyed we got 1.15 inches of rain yesterday evening.

We used to swim in our pond years ago...but that was before a young lady who was a college student was on a zip line across a small river here in GA very much like Larro's when she fell into the water...she had a small scratch from falling and she caught that flesh eating bacteria disease...all of her limbs were amputated....The articles I've read say the bacteria thrives in warm bodies of water in the south....Sooooo no thanks....Larro be careful...Drew has a point here....It is beautiful though...something out of Tom Sawyer...

We did have a 19 year old FSU student from Kuwait drown this past weekend. It has been a really long time since the last person drowned in the river. If the Lord calls me home {as the saying goes} while I'm swimming, I'll just back stroke to join him. Snakes and gators and the like have never bothered me. But now that we have tourist on the river, I do get kind of uneasy when a big pack of them show up:eek:

I see Larry's location is FL ... although I'm not sure if that where he is doing the swimming he references ...

Personally, I'd be more concerned about larger things in the water that might eat me ... although the ones you mention are a concern as well.
