looking to purchase a new riding mower and was wondering how to look up dealer cost/markup?

Dealer markup will vary, dealers get discounts on volumes, preorders, specials and other promotions so it is hard to pin down a dealers mark up. The costs for dealers are not published and it would be difficult to find the dealer cost on most machines as it is a closely guarded secret. What dealer would be willing to publicize their cost so a customer could try to get them down to sell at cost?

I am not sure without a inside connection you can find that out. You can go to the tractor builder on the Web site to see suggested retail. Stop over at River Valley Turf on John Deere road and they can help!

I purchased a new JD X739 early this summer when the dealer was extremely busy, the best I could do was 9% off MSRP. Others have reported getting up to 15% off during the off season.

It doesn't matter what the dealer's cost is. The bottom line is to buy the tractor for somewhere between 8% - 15% off. That's all that matters.

If you're only looking to spend $1000 - $1500, you're going to get junk that will fall apart in 1-3 yrs anyway.

You just want a homeowner grass cutter.Shop Home Depot, Lowes and Sears.

They'll be happy to sell you their junk as many times as you'd like to go back and buy it again and again.

They've made fortunes doing exactly that for decades.

If you want to buy one that will last you the rest of your life.

These guys around here can steer you in that direction, as well.

Where did he say he was looking to buy anything cheap? He's asking about stuff from a Deere dealer....nit exactly known for being cheap, or junk.

Get something with the Kawasaki V-twin engine. So far the only thing that has gone bad on my four year old Toro is an o-ring failed on the oil filler neck after repeated getting tugged on by brush (been using my mower as a wee, little brush hog—but I also service everything to a T).

I had a JD salesman state mark up was in the 25% range for tractors. May be less for a smaller item such as what you're looking at. All of that is not important however. Give THEM the price you'd be a buyer with meaning that which you'd be comfortable to pay mixed with the joy of ownership.

Ask yourself if you were a dealer would you sell your product to those who only want to buy for nothing over your cost, or as low as they wanted you to take? NO should be your answer. If not you have no respect for the guy you want to buy the product from. The retail seller's mark-up is how they stay in business. Figure out what you're willing to spend, and find something to match your price point or not.
Anything else is wasting the dealer's time.
