What do you pay for diesel?

i hate when you see offroad only 10 cents cheaper....cause there is lack of competition and the stations jacking up the price. If there is 40 cent a gallon tax on road deisel give or take why do you always only see like 10-20cents difference in prics?

OTOH, it may be the the price of on-road diesel is better than it should be because of competition and volume.

BTW, my delivery driver says that on-road, off road, and home heating oil all come from the same tank, the only difference is the red dye they add. At that point in time (late last winter), he told me that off road and HHO were the same price.

That is 100% true. #2 diesel (dyed or not) and heating oil are the same. For a few years there was low surphur #2 which could only be used off-road, but now it's difficult to find anything other than ultra-low sulphur- the refiners don't want to deal with (2) different types of diesel.

Today, diesel is $1.27 CND per liter in my area ($4.81 CND per gallon) and regular gas is $1.26 ($4.77 / gallon). Diesel is usually a couple cents cheaper here but gas prices have been dropping over the last couple week (from a high of about $1.40 / liter - $5.30 / gallon) and diesel never drops as fast.

Just got 500 gallons delivered earlier this week. $3.60 per gallon. (on-road, tax paid, "clear" diesel)

There's a huge difference in figuring the taxes for the on-road -vs- the off-road. On-road is PER GALLON, while off-road is PER CENT.

The Federal Excise Tax for "on-road" diesel is $0.2459 per gallon.
In Louisiana, the State Tax is $0.20 per gallon.


My local sales tax rate for off road is 8%.
So, off-road here would currently be about $3.45, or only 15 cents per gallon cheaper.

We do here in AL. The sales tax on off road began around the time off road became ULSD, give or take.

Last time I looked there was a similar difference in price here. Combine the price increase and longer drive to get the off road, I just use on road now. Plus my toys seem to run better fed on road fuel vs the off road I was getting.
