There have been many posts about issues with 3PT Hitch issues with the 5xx3 and 50x5E series tractors. I have a 2008 JD 5303 4WD unit. I don't think the 5303 was made in a 4WD model very long and believe it be almost identical to the 5065E. The only difference I have seen is that one is reported at 64 engine HP vs 65 engine HP.

I have noticed when running with an implement raised in 3 PT that I can hear a hissing noise. Bumping the rock shaft lever down makes it quit temporarily. When it occurs again I can raise it and bump down and it stops again. I suspect it may do this when working with a implement when the stop limit is set, but due to higher RPMs and focus on work being done it ones unnoticed. I have heard of heat occurring to the point of melting fuel tanks. I haven't had that issue but have seen it hot enough in the rear area to generate steam when washing off.

I really like the size, power and function of this unit versus the 2WD 5105 I came from. It suits and serves my needs well.

Question is, if this is a common problem what is the cause and what is the fix? If left uncorrected is there a long term maintenance risk occurring?

Don't know for sure, as what you call hissing I may interpret as something else. But it sounds like hydraulic noise at low rpm.
Next time you hear it, boost the rpm and see if it will stop.

I know exactly what you're talking about, my 5203 did the same thing but I never had any problems with the 3pt or anything else.

I have heard some say it is the hydraulic relief function?? The 3PT works as it should except for the noise and noticed with tractor not running it would not hold implement in the raised position.

Not sure how else to describe the noise. Perhaps next time out I can try to video what is doing.

Mine would hiss if the lift was raised up all the way. All you had to do is barely move the lever and it would stop. My 3pt never leaked down on my 5203, with or without anything on it.

I also never experienced the heat problem that I hear so much about.

That is the noise I am describing and it does occur when the lift is fully raised and does stop when lowered slightly. However it will do it again after a short period of time requiring the same procedure to be done again to make the noise stop. Unusual thing about the lift height holding with tractor not running is that I can recall times it would hold and some not. I don't usually leave anything raised like that due to safety concerns so don't have many test cases for it holding with tractor off.

If the noise happens when the 3 pt is lifted all the way to the top and stops when backing down just a tad, then it is an adjustment in the "stop".
Should be able to trace the linkage when the 3 pt arms are in full-up position, and spot the stop bolt connected to the arms. That feeds back via linkage to shut down the hyd. pressure. It is a form of a limit switch.

jdparts shows the hyd. linkages, but not which one to adjust.

I was able to take a quick video clip of it yesterday in hopes it might shed a little more light on the matter. Is there any way to post a .MOV file? This is the iPhone video format. Makes it very easy to hear the difference. Tried uploading and stated was invalid file format.

I understand the explanation of the lift reaching its stop, but should it begin making the noise again if it remains lower than the top limit of the lift? Once I lower it after a period of time it begins making the noise again and I have to lift and lower or just lower further to make it stop. If traveling over any distance you can't just keep bumping it down before you wind up dragging the implement. This is not been a huge problem that prevents use of the tractor or it doing what I need. More just curious why it is doing it and is there an easy fix.
