I used my friends dual tandem yesterday to haul the tractor and it pulled good but it was ruff. It was even worst when the trailer didn't have a load on it. I wish I had a friend that has a single tandem that I could use to see how it handles.
My biggest concern is being top heavy. I would think the duals would help on this.

Thanks for all the info guys.

The singles would help with the rough ride. Not for the fact that there are less tires, but for the fact that it is a lighter trailer, and would be sprung accordingly.

Kinda like the difference between a 1-ton truck being used to haul 500# vs a 1/2 ton being used to haul 500#

That was/is a major consideration if you are driving a lot of miles empty. The gooseneck will slap/buck more than a bumper pull. I would let the air out of the tires when I got unloaded if I was going more than 50 miles empty. When I picked up the trailer in Indiana it actually made me sick by the time I got into Michigan until I figured out the trick of airing the tires down to 30PSI. But for hauling heavy the gooseneck will be more forgiving and let you haul more weight without being as critical on loading. CJ

Duals would help with that, but so would a low-profile trailer like the Big Tex you are interested in. A low profile trailer helps considerably with sway.

My trailer is low profile tandem duals, but my equipment is heavier than yours.

I had a tri axle trailer before and will never get another one.

Does anyone know the max load on a Big Tex 14GN-28+5? Their site states it's GVWR is 15,900# and GAWR is 7000# each axle. Trailer weight is 5340#, so if you subject that from 15,900# you get 10,560". Give me only 10,560# to carry on trailer. Is this correct?
Thanks

your neglecting weight transferred to the tow vehicle.

for GN that can be as high as 25% (typical is 15-20%)

IF you assume a pin weight of 20% (15900*.2) = 3180

14000 -5340 +3180 = 11840 net max load.

depending on interpretation you might push that to 15900-5340+3180 = 13740(-1) at that net cargo weight, the trailer (when hitched to the truck) would scale (weighed at the trailer axles) at 15899 (1 lb under GVWR) although you would be over max GAWR.

even at 11840 lbs cargo on the trailer, you have a very real possibility of being over your GAWR for the real axle of the truck with a 3180 pin weight. This is why you may see hotshoters running no rear bed because they want to maximize pin weight to maximize payload on the trailer.

Well here is my setup.
I went with a Big Tex 14GN single tandems. I found this one second hand that's is a 2014 that was used three times and only paid $5000 for it. The trailer handles the load and pulls great.
