Gary & Two Bit - The posts are 8ft to start with which means the Atlas Copco hydraulic pounder handles are at 9ft. I'm not that tall. There is not a chuck that is shaped like the post profile for any pounder so I use the larger round chuck with a post cap so it does tilt a little bit. The pounder is ~80lbs. I could possibly use a ladder but my cycle times would go way up. I did not mention this before but I have 1400 posts to put in and I can get 70 done in a day and that is with hitting rocks and repositioning if need be. I'll dig out a pic later to share.

Picture of the gloves I have used this summer. The top 2 are Ace brand and the bottom 2 are TSC store bought. It is always the left that rips up so I have a lot of right spares. The Aces rip at the seams whereas the TSCs wear holes.

Two Bit - Yes I have. The large blows tend to bend post tops unless you have a chuck exactly fitted for the post profile. I went for the multiple fast blow style as it tends to move rocks out of the way and is post top saving. Mine I think does 1600 blows per minute. It is essentially a jack hammer technology. The other consideration for me was the Rhino PD55 but it required a significant towable compressor which jumps the cost significantly. The unit I have runs off my tractor hydraulics and I can still tow a small trailer with the posts I need to pound.

You've got it well thought out and every base covered.

Except for a good pair of gloves. :confused3: :)

Got any videos of it in action? Would like to see it work. Who makes it?

I appreciate all the replies thus far. Based on the responses I have on order for delivery tomorrow are a pair of the inexpensive rubberized kevlar gloves and a padded Lamont cowhide front and fabric backs. For the metal posts I'm pounding at the moment I find that the stitched seems are the problem and holding the post while being pounded slides the metal down the glove. If the kevlar gloves don't work out as planned I can use them for shucking oysters.

Update - The Lamont leather gloves mentioned above got a cut within 4 hrs of use. The less expensive rubberized kevlar gloves are performing well so far.
