We do it as often as possible, and are actually headed out to the country place in a few minutes.

From last weekend...

That is what I am talking about, I should say we are talking about, Helps you get close to God and gives you a quiet you can carry with you.

As the sun dips behind the Pine Nut mountains to the west, the shadow sweeps the valley and up the east range. The high desert is alive at the end of the day. In winter, when the sun dips, the cold sets in and it's time to quit, get the fire started. Summer, it's time to enjoy the evening performance of the traveling shadow. A few deer wander by, rabbits scamper and the coyotes start their song.

There's a satisfaction in being tired. At last light I'm reviewing the day with a faint smile. Later still, I'm out for a moment with the dog and a quick look at the stars. Nice to be here.

Dang, John, that is downright poetic! Sounds to me like the opening of a Great American Novel, or at least a great short story in there somewhere waiting to get out! :thumbsup:

Thanks. The beauty is inspiring. The evening performance and the Milky way both. The coyotes always make perk up and think of our coyote friend, Sandy. Have you read Sandy's story?

The few places left where it is peaceful enough to still notice and enjoy these simple yet profound things are what we call our "Close Places", because when there, we are so certainly closer to God.

Actually, no I hadn't, until you mentioned it and I looked it up today. I've read the entire thread and it's a wonderful story. Well done! :thumbsup: Looking forward to the book, if you're able to get to it. Can I recognize literary talent, or what! ;)

One of my favorite poems came to mind:

My mind to me a kingdom is;
Such perfect joy therein I find
That it excels all other bliss
Which God or nature hath assign'd.
Though much I want that most would have,
Yet still my mind forbids to crave.

No princely port, nor wealthy store,
No force to win a victory,
No wily wit to salve a sore,
No shape to win a loving eye;
To none of these I yield as thrall,--
For why? my mind despise them all.

I see that plenty surfeit oft,
And hasty climbers soonest fall;
I see that such as are aloft
Mishap doth threaten most of all.
These get with toil and keep with fear;
Such cares my mind can never bear.

I press to bear no haughty sway,
I wish no more than may suffice,
I do no more than well I may,
Look, what I want my mind supplies.
Lo! thus I triumph like a king,
My mind content with anything.

I laugh not at another's loss,
Nor grudge not at another's gain;
No worldly waves my mind can toss;
I brook that is another's bane.
I fear no foe, nor fawn on friend,
I loathe not life, nor dread mine end.

My wealth is health and perfect ease,
And conscience clear my chief defence;
I never seek by bribes to please,
Nor by desert to give offence.
Thus do I live, thus will I die,--
Would all did so as well as I!
Sir Edward Dyer
