Quick update. My dad came over and helped me get the post straightened back up, it actually went very smooth and it is now about perfect. We drove a heavy metal bar into the ground with a strap around the base of the bar, hooked the come-a-long to the strap and then wrapped my tow strap around the post. The first try we just tensioned it to see if the post would move and it started coming back with no problem. Next we wrapped a 20' sling around the very base of the post and connected to the shackles on my tractor and pulled a little tension to keep the base of the post in the correct place. We retightened the come-a-long till we were about a 1/4" too far and nailed everything together very well. We released all the tension and it settled back in to within less 1/16" of level. I had purchased two 12' treated 2x8's so after a good amount of glue one was nailed to each side for an extra reinforcement. I have some 9" carriage bolts now that I will bolt the whole thing together with just for good measure but I am very confident with the way it is now. It will be a few more days till I can work on it again but next step will be to replace the 2x6 that's broken and then the tin and it will be done. It was too dark to get pics when I was done so I'll get some tomorrow.

You think he didn't like my red and grey choice? Could be, lol.

Not everyone was a fan of the Eisenhower era. I'm just saying. . .

Say, your barn have a white roof?

So, anyway, now that you've looked real close at your posts, do you really think they also used glue to laminate the lumber together? Mine are 6x6 solids. A buddy has three 2x6s nailed together. I wasn't paying attention as to whether they used glue, too.

I've bought my share of ACQ, though, and can't imagine an effective glue for those heavy, green, wet boards coming off the truck. From how your posts came apart, I doesn't look like glue contributed much.

OTOH, that ain't much damage for having to catch a rolling round bale on a mission. I think it would have gone clear through my old tract house in the city.

Don't worry I didn't take offense, just joking around.

The posts weren't built on site, they arrived in the lumber shipment already built. There was glue in between the boards (I could see it in the after the damage) but I agree with you and don't think it did much to add strength. The glue was still stuck to each board but the glue separated cleanly. I did however "just because" glue everything again when I put it back together. I too was happy with the way the building absorbed or withstood the impact. The hill behind it is rather steep and the 1200+ pound bale had some momentum after rolling downhill about 75 yards.

A few pictures of the rebuilt post. Still need to add the carriage bolts.

I have done a fair amount of renovation work and was totally surprised to discover how easily laminated and glued joints came apart that were glued with what seemed to be the 'PL family' of glues. My suspicion is that exposure to atmosphere breaks down the adhesive qualities.
Also discovered that special adhesives (costly) to glue foam insulation to concrete also simply gave out over time and became powder.

Yes, I was a little surprised how the glue separated.

Thanks, I'll post some finished pictures next week when I get another chance to work on it.
