Wiring a small garage/shop?

I believe you are required to have a disconnect in the garage. The infeed breaker is fine for that. For safety sake you do not want to be working on a panel that someone in another area could turn back on. I am pretty sure this is a code requirement .

FWIW, my dad's house only has a 60A feed total for house, barns, etc....
It will flicker the lights some when he uses the welder, but has never been an issue.

It's amazing how little we needed and the difference between what is essential now.

My first home and one I still own has a single 30 amp fuse for the main... 3 bedroom one bath...

To really illustrate the point... a 3 unit building converted during wartime has a single 30 amp fuse for the entire 3 units together... it does have gas for everything else. heat, cooking, hot water...

Yeah I plan to have a means to break it at the garage. Time to take a trip to HD to get an idea on cost and sub panel options. This is what I have at my hut tub. Of course will need a few breakers for both 110v and 220v for the shop.

There's no way on earth, I could survive on 60A total! Yeah my carbon footprint is probably bigger than most but I like my toys and tools.
