Well, I have an old homelite with a 14'' bar with no brake, that I have used in the trees. It wasn't bought as a PRO saw ,and in my opinion it's not a pro saw ,but it is a top handle saw and is all metal . It was probably bought / made B-4 all the new top handle saws of today. I wonder if my Rancher 55 is considered a pro saw ?They say it isn't... It's old, is all metal case ( not plastic). Now my 372 is a pro saw (as they say) , but when I bought it , all the dealer wanted was my $ . He didn't even ask if I was a pro. I don't run the safety chains either. Maybe homeowners need to also only run the safety chains. No, I don't consider myself a pro tree climber, but I have all the climbing equipment and in my younger yrs climbed many a tree and limbed it out , before cutting the tree down from top to the bottom

The only place the "professional use only" comes up is in top-handle saws. Most dealers won't even hesitate to sell one to anyone.

As for "pro" saws it refers to the build quality ONLY and has zip to do with who is using one. That has been said several times by different people in this thread already.

Can we put this stupid subject to bed?

I believe that if you stay with a name brand that has a reputation for quality you can't go wrong. Having said that, I have always been told to get a Husky if you use it every day, and a Stihl if you use it hard for a month then put it up for a year.

I'm running 4 Stihls currently and have run Mac, Homelite, Poulan and a few others in the past 50 years. All of them were 'work' saws, "Rode hard and put away wet". Stihl has been the most reliable brand of them all.

When I hear something like that, first thought is, well, if they're so reliable, what happened to the other 3?

But then it could be different sizes, gave one to the kids, dropped a tree on one, etc...

So, what happened to the other 3? Just curious. :)

All different sizes, even the dreaded Top handle.. I have a CS 590, 450,370 and a T271

I have a Husky ?345? Has never failed me. Of course I'm on my 3rd one at the moment, having dropped a tree on the first one, and the second had a defective engine casting which they replaced with a whole new saw.

I have an axe that I have had my whole life. I had to replace the head twice and the handle 4 times

I heat my house exclusively with wood, on average about ten cords per year. With a few cords sold on the side and forty years of experience I am at least not a novice. On the other hand a chopper working each day to make a quota has cut as much wood in a year as I have in a decade. I've worked with several different brands and saw configurations. The chopper has probably worked a couple of saws he was given to death and has made a profit on one and lost money on another. His experience is deep but narrow. The Husgvarna 455 saw I'm running now works well for me. it cuts more wood on a tank of gas then I want to load , split and stack in a day. Would that same saw keep up with a chopper trying to stay ahead of a grapple skidder? I don't know. But if a shear is working the site and a saw is just for where the shear can't reach then a 455 will probably do.

Now I know that is a good saw.... but a 0.7 pint fuel tank will cut more wood than you'd want to load, split and stack in a day?
