Not one time in 10 would a seatbelt alone keep the operator from head trauma in a rollover.

that was my point, the seatbelt only hold your lap to the seat. given that the human sppine only moves a few degrees side to side, but can til forward almost folding in half, then head to forward contact, dash, stering wheel, etc will be expected. head to side of cab should be reduced though. people don't bend that way as easy. Now, take a real tall guy in a real small tractor with a real small cab, and the dynamic changes. side to side and front. heck. face might hit windshield all 4 ways before ever touching steering wheel.

I know from driving cabbed construction equipment that a 5-6' guy , if belted in a seat, can't physically lean over to the side far enough in a FOPS machine to contact a wall or side. forward though, as said is different. you can lean into the steering wheel with head or chest depending on height and seat setback.

That at least holds true for all the cat, john deer, case, dynapac, komatsu and hitachi equipment we have anyway.

I think it would be fairly easy to hit your head on the side of a cab even while seatbelted in. I mean, think about it.... how many times have you been belted in a car or truck and been able to reach over and unlock the passenger side door? Your head is almost in the middle of the next seat over and that's by choice, not the force of a rolling over vehicle.

Anyhow, sad for the family of this fellow.

you must have a real small truck. :)

My daily drivers are a ford F350 and an F450, my wife drives an E350

I can't touch the passanger door from the driver seat wearing a seat belt... not even close... If I take it off and climb over the center console I can. I can't hardly get my head far enough over to see between t he center console and the passanger seat while belted in.

None of the cabbed equipment at work can my head touch the sides. ( arms.. sure...head, no ). Head CAN touch dash and steering wheel with head.

OH SURE! Your truck is bigger than my truck!!! hahahahaha

I've got a '93 suburban that I have no trouble reaching the door lock on the passenger side door while belted in the driver's seat. Maybe I just have bigger body parts.... ;)

hahahaa

This is a sad story ,I wonder how many times this scenario is repeated in some form every year. Locally two boys died when they lost control going down a hill with a round baler behind went off the road and were killed .
I will sound like a jerk but most things of this nature are preventable , I can't ever recall having an incident of significance that wasn't invited by some short cut , lack of attention or highballing.

+1 I have almost had a couple rollovers while digging out stumps- my fault and due to inexperience at that, along with much less than ideal working conditions.

you might. :) I can't reach the door handle on my wifes 00 yukon when buckled in. center console and arm rest hits my side before i'm bent enough to get over there.

You know what I miss most about cars and trucks? Bench seats on date night! Nothing, and I mean nothing, brings me a smile more than cruising a country road at night with my arm around my wife's shoulder, radio on, heading to nowhere in particular....

Anyhow, discussion about death brings discussion about life. Have to mourn the losses and keep moving.
