Pistol for my wife

Gives me the willies. untrained woman with a gun. Nope, I vote for pepper spray...and by the way, I was a soldier and trained as a US ranger. If you pull a gun, you have to be prepared to actually kill a person. Women get pretty hesitant to do that, first time, even with training..A gunfight is not a debate.

Pepper spray is psychologically easier to deploy and use, is not lethal, but it is very effective in defense situations. It won't get you charged with murder either...Does your wife ever plan to fly...not with a firearm. Nope

I am a vet; I trained; I went to third-world crapholes. Whatever. Active combat training has nearly zero resemblance to defending yourself at the local shopping mall. Hesitancy is a good thing, because frankly it's bad to go around shooting people without considering all the alternatives, first. That does not mean "slow", it just means "stop and think (fast)".

That's why I hate tactical discussions on public carry. Tactics are for active combat in things called 'battles'. A person defending themselves in public really has to decide if deploying a weapon is absolutely required, and then they need to know how to use it. That's it. There are no tactics there - it's literally a binary switch (yes|no). That's why people need to train on how to deploy a gun and hit their target without thinking about it. Because if the time comes, they are better off using any spare brain cycles figuring a way to avoid the whole mess, not messing with a gun.

Women are great shooters and usually become good shots faster than most men. My wife went from interested newbie to being able to to clear a rack of steel - in a party dress, using a gun she'd never even held before - in about a year (though a few thousand rounds in that time).

Not picking a fight, just suggesting your 'conventional wisdom' is complete BS.

He says in friendly jest...

Trained has always fascinated me. It seems one must be trained in anything one does which sounds good. But then comes the big But?

Who trained the first trainer and did he get it right?

I had the same questions you have. My wife ended up getting a Charter Arms 38. ( pink lady ) ithe body is aluminum and very light. holds 5 rounds and is super easy to shoot as well as handle. Accuracy past 15 feet is a crap shoot, but for what she has it for, 15 feet should be more than adequate. After numerous times at the range she is comfortable shooting a semi auto but not so proficient loading and chambering rounds. I'm not certain that if she had to react quickly with a semi auto, and there was not a round in the chamber, that she would be confident doing so. The revolver is a no brainier. .02.

Everyone is different. I was a police officer when I met my wife more than 50 years ago. She fired one shot through one of my .38s when we were dating; just never had much interest in guns for herself, although sometimes when we're going somewhere, she asks if I have my pistol. She feels safer knowing I'm armed. So our two daughters grew up knowing where my guns were, but never had any interest in guns. But almost 2 years ago, our 46 year old daughter asked to go to the range with me and shoot because she'd never shot a gun. So I let her shoot the 9 mm Sig and both .38s. She shot a great deal better than I expected. And I was surprised that her favorite of the 3 guns was the S&W Chief. But I don't think she has any intentions of getting a gun of her own to shoot.

I agree. I think a woman would be more probable to actually use the spray and save herself, over a woman who at the instant, had to decide to try to use a gun to shoot and kill someone.

Maybe she should carry both lethal and less than lethal protection.

and heaven forbid if the 'public' ceases to exist. Then how is tactical defined? we live on shaky ground now a days.

Well, I have said it once, and I will say it again. XMS has his "stuff" together when it comes to women and handling firearms. I don't have anything against pepper spray, and it has it's place in your overall defense plan, but sometimes only a firearm will do.

I don't pretend to be a "big expert" but XMS is saying the things that my experience has to shown to be true.

For everyone's information, they will not let you travel with pepper spray on an airliner either. Some may allow a small canister in your checked luggage, but not any carry-on. So leave your firearms, knives, pepper spray, push knives, or just about anything you could conceivably defend your self with at home.
