First, the formula for calculating mowing time (acres/hour) is

[mower width (ft.) x ground speed (MPH)/8.25] x field efficiency factor.

The field efficiency factor allows for the fact that you would not be mowing uncut grass 100% of the time due to overlap, turning, bathroom breaks, etc. A field efficiency factor of 80% would be in the ballpark for mowing.

So, with a 6' cutter and a 4 MPH ground speed, you would be able to mow 2.3 acres /hour.

How much do you need in the way of average ag. income per acre to maintain ag. use assessment in VA?

Steve

Thank you for the formula. I'm not exactly sure yet on the amount of income needed. The land broker I'm using will give me the info this weekend.

Here's a link to info on use-value assessment in Fauquier County: Commissioner of the Revenue.

It looks like it shouldn't be too hard to qualify for ag. use assessment.
