I saw basically the same thing once. Was on the hwy doing about 100kms when a van (full size van, not a minivan) passed me in the outside lane and his front u-joint must have let go because there was a loud noise and the back of the van basically polevaulted the drive shaft. Not sure if it went up 6 feet, but definitely 4 feet up and two or three bounces plus fishtailing when it landed. Also had bit of metal flying around, I assume from the u-joint.

I had this happen to me in 1992 in my 1989 S 10 Blazer. I was doing about 30 mph when the transfer case let go. It nearly ripped it off the truck shearing the drive shaft. It pole vaulted me up to what felt like 5 feet. In the process it nearly took the rear axle out from under the truck and damage the rear axle and leaf springs.

All this while I was towing a 3500# 17' boat.

Ouch! I hope the interior upholstery was brown when you bought it, as I bet it was brown after this!!! :shocked:

This past Sunday, I had to borrow a car dolley to go get wife's 2008 impala. Tow vehicle was a 2003 Toyota Highlander. Power wise all was pretty good, but I have not cut in a pig tail to run trailer lights yet, so no lights. No breaks either, the dolley had them but not hooked up and working in at least a few years. The tow was ok... except for the tail wagging the dog any time I got over 45 mph. Was a long slow drive, takes just over a an hour at 65...

just to add to the safety police complaints, I had accidentally ordered the wrong hitch, which was about $89 cheaper but 9 inches too narrow with wrong holes. I welded "ears" on made out of 3/16" red iron purlion mounting bracket I had laying out in my miniature bone yard. The holes where drilled and wallered out except one, where drill battery died.

The major issue was the front bumper on the impala would not allow it to go on the dolley facing forwards, so I had to load backwards and lock steering (which never really locks 100%) and put in neutral. Think the slop in the steering lock is what caused the "wagging" effect.

I didn't take pictures but I have no reason to lie.

What did you do to keep from toasting the transmission (or is it a stick)?
Re: The wagging effect, what I have done is use a pair of small ratchet straps (1" wide, 1000# WLL) and strap the wheel to the left side of the drivers seat and the left side of the passengers seat. That holds it still and makes it so that you arent risking breaking the steering lock if you hit something in the road with one wheel.

No, bought it brand new. Happened so quick I didn't fully realize what had happened till I got out.

Yeah towing an automatic car with the drive wheels on the ground is usually a bad idea. There is stuff still turning in there and no fluid being pumped to lubricate it.
