its muffler time. Saw some interesting slip on's at TSC for various makes, none of which were yanmar. at $80 and up for a stock style set up plus shipping was wondering if there were any viable options on there. If theres no draw back to using something on there I probably would be ale to make something work with a saw zawll, wire welder and some clamps. prices run roughly half of a stock set up. Just curious, and cheap. any help greatly appreciated. Thanks to all who commented on my last question. funny, I found the answer to my question on accident when looking something else up. Couldn't find it for anything when I was looking for it originally. Great group of folks on here.

Mine is not stock. It slips over the flanged piece and has a clamp on it. Because I mow under low branced trees I have my muffler turned toward the front, then down and out. All been modified to suit my needs. If your handy with a welder and so on you can make anything work. Main thing is not to get a muffler that would cause back pressure to your engine.

We'll I wouldn't say I'm handy with a welder but I get by. It ain't pretty though. I guess anything the same diameter or bigger as far as muffler would work? Your set up looks darn nice. Some how i doubt there are flow rates available for these mufflers. I know on my truck folks like to run them straight to breath especially to keep egt's down.

I would just order 1 from Hoye and get on with my life. Better yet from here in Tenn. cheaper and probably less shipping costs.

thanks norm. allot cheaper. just hoping for the convenience of getting something local that would work just as well with a little elbow grease. Besides I like a project from time to time. I will probably end up going with your suggestion or a stock one if I cant find anything that wont restrict too much. Only way I can think to be sure is to compare flow rates which I haven't seen available as of yet, but im not done looking. From what I have read on diesel forums I believe alot of guys do a muffler and cat delete to open up restrictions and run a little cooler compromising a little torque but is commonly done to compensate for adding tuners, various modifications and such that raise EGTs. Anyone have any thoughts as to how this would apply to these tractors?

From what I have read on diesel forums...
You're overthinking it.

Just size a muffler from anything that has similar/larger hp rating. Also same CI displacement. Diesels run with the air intake wide open all the time. So long as the replacement can move the same CFM of air as the original factory design ...that's good enough.

Now back to the practical world: Your same muffler is installed by Yanmar on their engines up to double the displacement of your YM1700. So its sized adequately large, even for any modification you could do on a YM1700. And its built tougher than an automotive muffler, to stand up to hitting tree branches, and vibration.

As Norm said, don't waste time analyzing this and calculating the math for optimum specs. Just buy a replica muffler and know its sufficient.

California says it like it is. Your over thinking it. Anything that you find at TSC will probably work as long as its not for like an INTernational Cub or something similar.

Yup, overanalyzing, a muffler is a muffler. On second thought it could effect your quarter mile elapsed times.

Hummm. Straight pipe out the back split to Duel. :D

Like said this is a 35 year old simple deisel motor with pretty much a baffled can to make it a tad quieter, not a high performance 450 horse power modern EPA deisel rig tuned for max HP and MPG and torque.
