Attaching sprocket to pipe

Im building a spooler for layflat hose. it has a 36 inch sprocket with 112 teeth being pushed by a 13 toothed sprocket and chain, hydraulic motor is being relayed through an OHLA bearing to the smaller sprocket. i dont want to weld the 36 inch sprocket to the pipe because i want to be able to remove the sprocket in case of failure in any way. how can i attach it?

36 inch in diameter
1/2 inch thick
2 1/2 inch hole in center


2 1/2 inch in diameter solid steel pipe
44 inches long

Weld on a pipe flange to the pipe and then drill/bolt the sprocket to that. Or something similar.

How about this? It's about $15.00. You can drill and tap holes in the side to mount the sprocket.

For pipe I would use a pipe flange, for a solid bar axle, a weldable hub would be the ticket.

You might also want to check out taper lock bushing and sheaves. It wouldn't be hard to adapt a TL sheave to your 36" sprocket and the only thing you need to do is have a keyway milled into your shaft to provide a positive drive.

Going to weld a sleeve to the sprocket and slide it onto the shaft. drill a hole through both sleeve and solid steel pipe, insert locking pin.

good plan except, that pin is going to take a lot of shear force.

Shear pins for a baler would make it the weak easily fixable point. IIRC the shear pins for a massey baler were 1/4" with a squished nut. Other than that anything other than a grade 8 bolt is going to break quickly. Don't expect a roll pin or split pin to survive long.
