I really enjoy having intelligent discussions with people who have an opinion that differs from mine. I like to try to understand why they believe what they do. Unfortunately, it (the intelligent discussion) seldom happens. :( :(

Never try wrestle with a pig. They like it and are more experienced at it.

The beliefs of many people are based on emotions. It is very hard to change feelings by using facts. That may just strengthen the feeling by having to defend it. It would take a stronger emotion to change it.

We have likely all heard the stories of the gun owner who sells all after an accident, or an anti-gunner who buys one after a mugging.

Bruce

You can't reason with someone who didn't use reason to get where they are in the first place. All antigunners have is emotion. No reason or facts or reality are ever going to change that. Well, unless they get mugged, raped or killed - then maybe.

I followed it, but never commented on the thread. Anything about guns seems to get political, and it is worse in the winter. I was surprised when religion got introduced.

I am guilty of mentioning religion. When an avatar is an overt religious reference, I don't think referencing that in a discussion of opinions exceeds the use of the avatar itself in terms of the site rules. If it's okay to display, it should be okay to reference.

Of course guns will be a politically charged topic, many millions have been spent to insure that. We reap what we sow. When you plant cockle burs you can't pick daisies.

I stay out of religious, politics and gun topics, I do read them, but I keep my opinions to myself. My blood pressure stays more or less normal that way.

Politics, religion and your choice of toothpaste are the three things you should never discuss. Was talking to a retired Catholic priest at a party one night and I mentioned that in conversation. The next day I realised that I had just equated his religion to a tube of toothpaste. He still speaks to me !!

This started as a good and interesting thread that some of you HAD to pervert into a political thread...
I hope the TBN management bans some of you...some were already banned from the Friendly Politics forum a while back.

Sadly, Roy, in the relatively few posts in this thread, we have the answer why the other thread got off track. The people who take threads off track will always believe they were justified in doing so. You do not have to be religious to be self righteous.

I'm hoping any more firearms threads (outside of the Friendly Politics forum) will be monitored by us...and any post that goes political (either pro or anti) are immediately reported to the moderators.
I know I'm guilty as much as others, but I do try to remain on topic....so, when I write "report to the moderators", I'm including my posts as well.

I hope TBN management re-opens that thread, after pruning out the political posts.

Well opinions are like ******** , everyone has one and they all stink. :)
I think all gun threads should only be opened in Friendly Politics as I cannot imagine any such thread not becoming contentious in a short time. That includes technical threads about guns as well, like "what caliber should I use for moose hunting" It matters not that a poster just asks a simple question about guns or ammunition, since guns are a hot button issue for many people.. There are people out here that love guns and shooting, and people that not only hate guns and shooting but hate those of us that love it. Of course bringing religion into the mix, just throws gasoline on the fire.

Another issue is (and I am very guilty of this) is that I pay no attention to what forum I am on. I look at today's posts, ALL posts in ALL forums. Any posts that interests me from its title, I will open it and comment on it if I can help. I have certainly said things I should not have said because I was not paying attention to what forum the post was posted in.
