Buick and Deere segwayed from diesel additives to the witches' broth in the Scottish play on an earlier page of this discussion.

I had to respond:

And if that doesn't make the scene scary enough, the witches announce that they are just the warm-up act:

By the pricking of my thumbs
Something evil this way comes!

and Macbeth arrives onstage...

. Big companies or big government have very different needs: their primary concern is not to keep old equipment running. Both big government and big companies have many incentives to buy new equipment regularly. They just want the current equipment to last until their accountant says they should get a new one. I have no interest in new, inferior-by-EPA-mandate equipment, .

Exactly.

Actually I go on stage tonight in the production of Meet me in St Louis at 7;30PM for the 2nd of 12 shows.
If I can find the wear test . It will show that the witches brew in Macbeth is probably above the specs of some diesel additives.

The problem with these laboratory wear index numbers is that they represent at best a single process measurement, not an outcome measurement. Yes, it SEEMS a good idea to increase lubricity, but what is the actual outcome on real world (or even laboratory studied) engine life? And, are there unintended negative side effects associated with other ingredients in the brew? Is there any demonstrable benefit on engine life by supplementing fuel to exceed the wear index number of unenhanced fuel from the pump? For many things once you reach a certain number there are no additional benefits to be had. Simple example: once you have adequately fed a person, there are no additional health benefits to further feeding (and indeed perhaps negative effects). If the surrogate wear index marker has clearly been linked to engine outcome that is one thing but if we are supposed to simply assume that increased lubricity (above untreated fuel) is good, then that assumption could be wrong. Again, I come at this not as a diesel engine expert but rather by drawing parallels to my own field. We simply do not any longer accept "process" indicators without a clear link to outcome as evidence. There are simply too many examples where the process indicators mislead.

The ball wear test maynot be ideal .However precision repeatable labratory tests using diesel and various fuel additives .this beats what Bubba down at the tavern thinks works best.

I agree. Actual experience doesn't hold a candle to laboratory experiments.
