Since when is asking to see good data evidence of bias or flawed reasoning?
It isn't ... and, of course, I never asserted that it was ... so: straw man ...

But unfortunately (for you) that isn't the only thing you've done in this thread.

You appear to have an opinion (fuel additives are, to some degree or another, snake oil) ... and since it's apparently a very devoutly-held opinion, it has given you an agenda ...

Since you have offered no tests or conclusive studies which show that is in fact the case (that reputable diesel fuel supplements are snake oil), you're treading on some fairly unscientific ground ...

Which is what makes it fairly ironic ... as well as rather amusing ...

I could go through and pick a lot of what you've previously posted in this thread apart, in terms of the flawed reasoning, but fortunately (again for you) I simply don't have the time at the moment.

Lucky you.

BTW ... if you are really big on this "discounting anecdotes" thing, would you then advise that we discount/ignore your considerable comments on the subject of grapples ?

I mean, after all, they are just ... anecdotes ...

and just to think, if folk had only BELIEVED the fuel additive ads of the 60s and 70s their '73 Torinos would still be around.

STP stood for WHAT ?
Ooops, it seems to still be on the market and I think I saw a diesel powered Oldsmobile less than a month ago.

Of COURSE fuel suppliers blend up their own mix and for their own good it had better be adequate - perhaps not IDEAL, since the profit motive dominates, but my trucks aren't destined for a million miles anyway and my tractors will almost certainly outlast me WITHOUT the addition of snake oil (subtraction of cash from my pocket for that) in their tanks .

That full report has been posted on here, and is commonly cited on diesel sites.

It's getting a bit dated (formulations have changed by now), but the attention paid to it underlines the concerns people have, and hunger for data.

BTW b&d, care to answer the question I posed ? How many road-going diesels do you prensently own and maintain ?

What does that straw man question have to due with snake oil additives. Other than IPA and on occasions a dose of cetane in old summer fuel for winter use. #2 should not be considered acceptable for winter use in any circumstances and only considered for emergencies. The summer stuff has wax in it which will gell, no questions about it in cold weather. My Detroit Diesel by design does keep the fuel warm and is tolerant compared to my JD. No other brews, potions or elicitors are required besides the IPA and occasionally cetane booster. The rest are placebos to feel good.

I've been using Stanadyne All Season Performance Formula for almost 15 years, initially for the reduction in cloud point(gelling point) for my pre 1980's farm tractors. Lately my reasoning has leaned towards the lubricity factor and also the cetane boost(up to 6 points) as my diesels range from 7500 to 11000 hours usage and anything I can add to make the fuel fire easier in these old units is welcome. It is also recommended by many engine manufacturers. I would caution against using PS 911 as a regular use type additive as the label says to use only in a frozen/gel situation- adding a half fill to the filter/water separator and topping off with clean(room temp.)diesel fuel. It also contains alcohol which may be harmful to late model injection systems. Thanks- Mark N.

As nmark alluded to. read the label. If the fuel de-icer contains methyl alcohol it's going to ruin any gasoline fuel injection system and any common rail diesel system. It's not even a good idea in carburated or old mechanical pump diesel systems.
The only alcohol to pour into a tank is 99.9% isopropyl.

Let's go with urban dictionary, but feel free to correct to a def'n I'm missing...

straw man:

A logic fallacy involving the purposeful misrepresentation of an argument in order to strike it down.

Although some posters seem confused by the title, this thread is nominally about diesel fuel addtives.

My question relates pretty directly to whether or not you have any Skin in the Game. How is asking what type/era of diesel you own a Straw Man ?

You constantly post about how you have absolutely no use for any post-emission diesel. Frankly I'm surprised to find that you own anything that will run on something other than Bunker C.

If one owns nothing newer than a Lister, then all of this "additive PT Barnum stuff" is a Don't Care, as it has little relevance to the application - I get that.

I asked the question to establish context, but will refrain from doing so again.

3930 how can you still be asking questions when the answer was posted?
Ford 3930
1990 - 2002 30 Utility Series

That is not a common rail diesel. IPA, winter diesel and a block heater is all she needs.
