Draining water filled tires....rust?

Plain water will rust your rims. I just went thru a laborious task of sanding/grinding out a large front rim on the 5420 MFWD. I painted it with rusty metal primer and some enamel yellow paint and let it dry in the sun for a week before mounting the tire. Then, I saw on ebay someone selling new ones painted silver for NH for a bargain price of less than $200. I saved some money but I wore out my back and my 4.5" grinder a bit.

Now I'm nervous again about filling with water. Wonder if putting a gallon of some kind of additive to mix in with water....if a gallon of ???? Wonder if that would be enough?

I'm sure it would take some years...but I plan on owning my tractor until I die. So....at 40 yrs old....I hope that's another 30 yrs at least with tractor. ..lol

Antifreeze has corrosion inhibitors.. They make non toxic pg based stuff.

Part wear out, they wear faster if you use them


Use your tractor, enjoy it, if a rim rusts in 25 us, replace it and keep enjoying your tractor

I would think that tires filled with water would not rust the rim out any faster from the inside than from the outside. The outside is exposed to sunlight, chemicals, manure etc and for sure that will rust faster than water. If the rims have a good solid paint job on them when filled, I don't think they would rust out in a lifetime or two expecially if the water level is kept above the rim.

Tractor is pulled in garage and I'm filling in the morning! !!

....and heck....I know other parts on the tractor are going to wear out WAY before rusted rims from filled witb water.
....plus....I don't know why I'm being "over cautious" about this? Because I "use" my tractor for a tractor!!
(I see pics here on tbn and think doesn't this guy use his tractor? The darn tractor still looks almost brand new!!! Lol
...and I'm kinda embarrassed to show a pic of mine witb same amout of hours on it...haha!!)
(I don't abuse it....BUT I do run it...if you know what I mean?)

I have a ford 850 Franken tractor. It is mostly a 55, but has a later models power steering, running boards are welded on etc.

It's a monster, but moves my hay rolls fine

That's one heck of a tractor!!

I got lucky.....got my jd 2320 with under 300 hrs practically free. (Company wife was working for new I wanted it. The owner was behind on personal taxes....5yrs behind....so owner told my wife if she did all those yrs taxes that she (the owner) would give us the tractor!!!) Wife said it was around $4200 if charged her....I said "honey...it would be one thing if it was a good deal.....but this is a STEAL!!" (Wife knew what tractor was new and worth at time)
Oh....and came with trailer, grade master...like a box blade but better, and a woods rear finish mower

I LOVE MY WIFE!!!!


Oh...just got done filling tires. Came in to rest a badly sprained ankle so haven't tried them out yet.

Oh....and to Boggen.....I tried to explain myself/situation clear but failed to say ....what I mean by ruts is not from digging but mainly after I do the "heavy" digging and just using tractor around the house with so much more added weight I'm afraid it will cause ruts or "tire dibbets" trails because my yard is sometimes soft. Every year there a few days I don't drive around back because of this now before added weight with filled tired.

there are times ya just do not get out on the lawn no matter what, heck even a riding lawn mower will leave ruts, (not filled tires). or riding lawn mower to light weight and get stuck on wet grass on a hill.

when stuff is to wet, it is just plain to wet outside, and you will end up creating ruts. and you just need to wait the stuff out, till it dries. lawn's can take a pretty heavy weight before you start creating ruts. you just need to "wait" till stuff dries up more and take things slow. though i have a lawn vs a golf course greens. meaning some dandelions here and there, some weeds here or there, maybe even a rut here or there. maybe a no grass in some shaded spots. *hoping to eventually kill out the creeping charlie* and when mowing is done, i do make sharp turns, and tear up a little grass here or there. it grows back in a couple weeks. and all is good. when grass gets to tall, i leave the clumps to rot away back into the yard, ya i could wait another half day for things to dry out, but other things to do.

while the RV stuff has anti corrosion and like in it. what about the condensation? i mean if ya leave some water in tire. every day it gets warm enough / cold enough through the entire day going to cause some condensation on the rim i am guessing. more so if tractor is left outside vs placed in shed.

I understand what you're saying.....but I can tell you don't have a clue in how my "back 40" gets. (Don't expect anyone that hasn't experience my area.....I know. ....I grew up 20 something yrs in Michigan and thought I had soft ground up there...lmao...nope!

....and when I say "ruts" ....I should have explained myself better....I mean "dibbits" ...not a rut as tearing up lawn.
There's times where my big *** leaves them when walking...lol

Anyhow. ...got them filled this morning and so far so good.
