Well, was looking at a Harbor Freight torch set priced @ $149.99, which after a 25% coupon was going to be $112.49 plus sales tax.

Then, while poking around on the internet I came across a welding supply company with a "Harris [not "Harris type"] Iron Worker" set; looked like pretty-much the same sort of set-up, priced at $125.00 including shipping but would have sales tax (same state). So, for about another 15 bucks I figured I would get a "name brand" and I placed an order.

I think it is pretty-much the same set-up one gets if one is buying the set with the little tanks- I'm just not getting the tanks or the tank carrier. Act. regulator is supposed to fit the larger tanks ( CGA 510)

I have received confirmation of shipping, but now I noticed that I can no longer find that set on the web site. I guess I bought the last one. Checking the Harris site shows that the current "Iron Workers" come with more expensive regulators than the set I am buying (I am getting 601 series single-stage). They also come with 20 feet of hose, vs. 8 feet I am getting (but then I was also figuring on buying 50 feet of hose anyway) so I assume the price on the "new" sets will be higher.

Since I have lived without a torch to this point, I don't think it will get used all that often, but will certainly be nice to have on hand for those rare occasions that require it.

I think you made the right choice. Single stage regulators will be fine. Purchase oxy/acet quick connects and the 50' hose set. You will then have the option of 20, 50, or 70 foot working lengths. With one torch handle this combination would require two pair sockets and two pair plugs.

Are those torch-mounted flashback arrestors? I have some coming. The old torch that came with the bottles didn't have them.

Yes they are. They are available in two styles: regulator end or torch end.

I had heard about flashback arrestors but never paid much attention until I bought this torch. I was reading about torch-mounted vs. regulator mounted, and read where having both MIGHT be a bad idea, as the increased restriction of flow might actually increase the possibility of a flashback. I have a set of torch mounted ones on order.

The last time I used an acetylene torch was back in welding class in school, which was probably 1976 or so, but I still remember that "pop-back" and "squeal" sound.

I picked-up a welding handbook back in 1986 or 1987, thinking it would just be a matter of time before I had an acetylene torch. Took a lot more time than I figured.

I picked up this one off ebay. Very well written.

Somewhere about the same time as I got the welding handbook, I also picked up a book called "Operating the tractor-loader-backhoe"

Still waiting for the tractor-loader-backhoe to come along....
