Burning walnut

I have some downed walnut on my property, just limbs and smaller pieces not good for any kind of woodworking projects. Does walnut burn good? I don't burn for heat, just recreationally in a fireplace and fire pit.

Yep, burns just fine if it's dry.

Not the best IMO. Takes longer to dry. And just ain't as good as oak, ash, maple, etc.

And I wouldnt burn it in a fireplace at all. Cannot stand the smell of walnut. But cherry is excellent.

I like walnut myself, true not the btu of some other hardwoods but still not bad.

All true. And if it is already down and needs cleaned up, might as well burn it.

But I try to avoid it. It takes the same time and effort to cut as better wood.

My neighbor had a good size black walnut go down in his yard, less than 30 feet from the road.

Cut it up, took it home and split and dried it. Burned pretty good, some of the easiest "free" firewood
I ever picked up.

"Free" firewood normally requires a lot more work, maybe more than it's worth, but it's "free"

I had a good sized walnut tree die on my place that was pretty twisted up. I was a bit nervous about splitting it, but found that it was the easiest wood to split I have ever come across. I have it mixed up with the oak in my wood pile and I can't tell the difference when I put it in my wood stove.
