If there are teenagers in the neighborhood, that would be a good starting point. We had some calves shot, and hay set fire to. Often kids don't need a reason to do dumb things. It is just part of being a kid.

Sounds like there could be some mischief going on there. But any metal gate that opens by a roadway I always padlock. Especially the one across from one neighbor. As after he backed through the electric gap I had I set large cedars and made him mad when I set one right in the middle of his tire tracks. It's about 8" in diameter and about 42" deep. The one it's tied to is about 14" and just as deep.
Hint: have found that large skeet shoots that last a few hours are very good deterrents when you are new to a neighborhood.

Yeah, but even if someone had asked me to participate in one of the stories I would have declined. Nothing to be gained by doing it.
Sad that gates have to be padlocked. Probably not that surprising though.

Sorry about your ram.
If someone let him out, could they have fed him some sort of drug that would make him act crazy? Seems like he was doing things I wouldn't expect but I know nothing of sheep.
Another possibility is he had something wrong in his brain and no one else was involved? Tumor or something he ate?

It's possible that he rammed his way out, left his girls, and headed to the neighbors, but all of the events that it took for him to get there combined seem very unlikely. It is breeding season so Rams are more aggressive in protecting their ladies. I don't think I have any of those types of mushrooms growing around here.

I hadn't even thought about "magic" mushrooms. But if you use grain based feed, you might have them. I've seen cows go a little crazy after eating them. But it could have been some bad feed too. I forget the name of it, but when grain gets a certain kind of mold, it can have similar effects.

I was joking, don't think I have any. They are on all grass, no grain until later in hopeful pregnancy.

Never having had a ram, couldn't a knowledgeable person roped his horns, dragged him to a tree and tied him up? He might have knocked me on my rear a few times, but I would rather have that than shoot the neighbor kid's ram.

That is what all my other neighbors have been saying. I don't think the neighbor who shot him is at all knowledgable about animals other than his dog. I think this is evidenced by shooting one of the smallest breeds of sheep and then calling the media to do a story on you. Also shows how clueless the media is.
Hard for me to judge because I don't know what I would have done in his shoes not knowing anything about sheep. I would like to think at the very least I would have fired a warning shot or something. Who knows?
