Why do you feel your on the spot when it's your dealer that gets tractors for the same price as Barlows and wants so much more of your money for the same tractor than Barlows who is even delivering it at a fair/far distance? Your dealer is the one that should feel on the spot with you knowing how much mark up he is charging you because Barlows doesn't sell them for no profit. He and I were discussing this yesterday as some tractor dealers operate like car dealers and charge so much more profit.

That's not accurate. Dealers get volume rebates from the manufacturer. The larger the volume, the larger the rebate. This is how car dealers can sell cars at "factory invoice" becuse they are making money on the volume rebate to the dealer. As such, Barlow's may in fact be paying significantly less for the tractor than your local guy.

With all that being said, a deal's a deal.....

I have a different take on this than the other responders. If I'm reading your post right, you agreed on a price and the dealer ordered the tractor for you. If that's the case, I'd suck it up and honor the deal I had cut with the dealer.

My honor and pride are worth more than the price difference you're talking about.

Plus, if you back out of the deal, what do you think is gonna happen when you take your Barlow's Kubota in to your local dealer for service? He might tell you to hit the road with your Barlow's Kubota.

And this is nothing against Barlow's. I'd be happy to do business with them. But I think you've already made a deal, and in that position I'd live up to the deal.

Agree. It would make me a better shopper the next time I made a major purchase. I would check prices before I finalized a purchase.

And I make myself quit looking, once I am happy enough to make the deal, and give my word or a handshake.
Like others have said, do your homework before finalizing a deal, and then once it,s finalized, live with it.

We're on page five and back on page 2 he said he made the deal with his local dealer. But people are still chiming in about what he should do.

They're giving their opinion on how a deal should be handled from their perspective, regardless of the OP's original posed questions. This could go on for years.

$3500... No contest, I asked my local dealer to adjust his price some, no way it wa happening. I showed him the price and told him all I wanted was some reasonable adjustment, split the price instead of losing the sale. His response was if you buy from the other guy you will not get any service from this company.

This is called blackmail, plain and simple.

Dealers like that, in my opinion, are destined to go out of business. If he makes those kinds of comments, and has that kind of personal philosophy, what else is he willing to do??

The internet is a great equalizer, and buyers and sellers should already know the best prices before going in. All it takes is a half our or so on the computer, and you have a pretty good idea of the prices for the tractor and options.

I'm off for more tractor research.

That's not accurate. Dealers get volume rebates from the manufacturer. NOT KUBOTA DEALERS, NO, NO, NO The larger the volume, the larger the rebate. This is how car dealers can sell cars at "factory invoice" becuse they are making money on the volume rebate to the dealer. As such, Barlow's may in fact be paying significantly less for the tractor than your local guy.
AGAIN NO, NO, NO NOT TRU
With all that being said, a deal's a deal.....

Car and truck dealers get "hold back" which is a percentage of sales plus other volume benefits but not Kubota tractor dealers. Kubota still owns most new Kubota tractors which are sent to a dealers lot to be offered for sell and dealers can also order special order tractors for a specific customer. Believe you spoke about something you know not.:D Every Kubota dealer pays the same price for a Kubota tractor on the same day.

As many have said here it comes down to whether there was a meeting of the minds and an agreement made for the tractor/attachments at the given price. If no such agreement was made then either party, dealer or buyer, has some room to continue the discussion. I suspect that most of us have been in this position. We thought we had the best deal made only to find one better somewhere else. Its happened to me for sure.

But nothing irritates me more than when a dealer tries to add delivery charges, set up charges, document fees and some of the other stuff that has a tendency to show up at the time of delivery. I hold their feet to the fire with the price they agreed to. I think it is the same for the buyer though. If we say we are on board at the price they quoted and give them the instruction to "get the tractor" then, we need to honor that price as well.

I also see nothing wrong with an "attempt" to get the dealer to sweeten the deal a bit if we find a lower price. It probably is a good way to get some satisfaction and maintain a relationship with the dealer down the road. But most of us would be quite irritated if the dealer said he figured the cost wrong and was too low thereby saying the price was going up. We would be on this site complaining about the dealer.

In the end this worked out well for both parties and I commend the original poster on how he handled it.
