I will bet my next paycheck that GM and Ram will have Aluminum bodies by 2020.

Chris

OK, don't cash this next check and put it in an envelope marked do not open til 2019. Lol

BTW I'm not taking your bet.

Who am I to question Ford's decision to introduce aluminum in the model being a truck. Trucks are known for being used and abused and dented.
.

Fleet vehicles often don't get repaired so it wouldn't be much of an issue. We don't fix our fender benders and the resale is the same. The aluminum actually has a higher resistance to denting anyway.

I have dented more steel wheel rims than deformed any aluminum wheel. I bet that is true with most people.

For those of you mocking aluminum, how many have steel wheels on their vehicles? Not many by sales statistics. Very few are steel.

Or a aluminum engine under the hood. SMH.

I wouldn't bet on aluminum, the only reason being some may go to composites instead. In a way its a safe bet though since many cars already have aluminum body panels, I know the hood on my Challenger is.

I still don't understand all this worry over aluminum -- I've had it in various forms on many cars over the years, and never had issues. Other manufacturers have had all-aluminum bodies for quite some time.

Aluminum can be more difficult to work with and more expensive. I haven't seen any comparisons yet on cost to fix parts on the new F150 vs one that is steel. Its fairly easy on something like a hood or fender that just bolts on but you get into parts like a quarter panel, roof, doors etc that need welding and that where I think the cost would go up.

What is this based on?

My understanding is the opposite, that is why they dont' sell aluminum sheet metal for barns but they do use it for soffit. Obviously aluminum does not do well in hail or they would sell aluminum sheet metal. But in an application where impact resistance is not an issue the aluminum does just fine.

Mocking aluminum? Laffin. You are really sensitive.

I just love how you try to spin everything about Ford. You were the one claiming that all the studies that were shown were all rigged against Ford and it was a conspiracy. Now you are spreading misinformation about aluminum and trying to justify Ford having aluminum trucks by looking at how wheels are made. Go look at how thick those aluminum wheels are and you will quickly see they are not sheet metal so there is no reason to compare them to other sheet metal like hoods and body panels.

Oh and claiming that fleet vehicles dont get repaired really does nothing to help your position of how great aluminum is. You basically are saying those vehicles dont get repaired so the additional cost to repair aluminum panels doesn't mean much.

I'd be really curious how that goes getting repaired. Do shops get paid more by the insurance companies or does the owner pick up the extra costs associated with repairing aluminum?

Chris

How does an aluminum block engine have anything to do with the cost to repair aluminum body panels on a F-150?

Hmmm, perhaps because weight isn't really an issue, so the cheaper material wins out (much like has happened with trucks up to this point)?

If the aluminum soffit was more expensive you would have a great point. But it's not more expensive, actually cheaper.

16" x 12" steel soffit $24.59

16" x 12' aluminum soffit. $19.28

It's about the impact resistance. Works fine on soffit but not on the roof.
