I don't want to mess up CDN's thread too much, but I started out looking at the largest CUTs with cabs and then Utility size tractors, and finally realized I wasn't looking at them for their PTO capability. So, I decided I could get a solid, used backhoe for about the same money, and have more capability for what I need...moving dirt, and lifting heavy stuff. I have culverts to fix and create, a land bridge to create, remove one septic field, fix another septic field, then build some large berms (10' high, 40' wide with side berms 10' high and 24' deep) for a shooting bay, and clean up a large number of huge downed trees at the back of our property (thinking of getting a 3pt splitter for the Massey and selling the firewood). I'm sure I'll think of more stuff before long!

Yep, bucket on the left, then stick, hoe and e-hoe. I like the simple system that should need less maintenance, and the fact that it should have the best feel of all the various setups available even if it's a bit slower (no rush since I'm not doing it for a living)....and I don't have a lot of time on a backhoe so I wasn't worried about what pattern it had.

I like the simple system that should need less maintenance, and the fact that it should have the best feel of all the various setups available even if it's a bit slower (no rush since I'm not doing it for a living)....and I don't have a lot of time on a backhoe so I wasn't worried about what pattern it had.

The treddle swing on those are horrible. Very little accuracy. Also the wrist control on the left is very unnatural. But being a newbie operator you should be able to adjust to it all. Actually, if you've not operated a hoe much, you won't know the difference. Just don't get on a properly setup hoe. Very handy piece of equipment to have.

Yup, things happen but there is a upside to it.....with the exclusion of the snowblower, a full size backhoe might be the ticket for me also. Decent used ones are in the 20-30k range which is less than a used 60hp tractor. And with the next property we are looking for to build on, might be a better choice anyway, then I could do my own excavation.......

I looked at a very nice a 2002 Deere 310G with 2000hrs recently for $29,900...just sayin'
