If your set on Apple don't rule out the mini, personally I think it's a better size.

Kinda depends on what you want to use it for. If it's for surfing the web an $80 Walmart Android Tablet will do just fine. We bought one, I think its a 10" RCA and it surfs the web just fine. It is however WIFI only, doesn't work on the Cellular networks. But then again, you don't need a wireless plan for it either. This is the one we bought, it was $79 at the store after Black Friday, I think it was Saturday after when we bought it.

Wow, good deal, even better than this next book 8 android tab work got us, dual core 8mb, etc.

If you are an iOS dev like I am you should know that iOS 8.2 is going to address the issues with iPad 2 and iPhone 4s. Along with patching most of the bugs. I do think that maybe apple should have blocked the 4s and iPad 2 from updates until they got the iOS working properly on them but iOS 8 has too many features to just pass up if you can use it.

That would be great if it does. Just saw 8.2b3 in the Dev Center today, but not planning to run any of the 8.2 betas since I am in the middle of a client project.

I think most of the issues in 8.0-8.1.x have been quality control. Not nearly as good as it used to be.

Well it seems that it's a 95%+ iPad vote. I have the iPhone but am not a diehard guy. Thanks for the pointers on the wifi and cellular data. I am on AT&T. Only reliable carrier in the area

Ok next questions. What can I do on an iPad? Is it only good for surfing the internet or can it be used for more? Would I be as well off getting another laptop?

I've wondered about this too but aside from the high price of the iPad I don't know if I would want another Apple product. We have various levels of Ipod touch's in my house. My wife's is a 4 and she can still get apps and upgrades but she's had so much trouble with apps crashing that she has started deleting them and just using our laptop again. Maybe it's the app manufacturers issue, I dunno. But mine is the version before and I can't load squat on it anymore. I was thinking it's getting too small anyway for my old-ish eyes but there's no way to do any upgrades on one of these things except for buying new. I've been pondering trying an inexpensive Windows based tablet like the HP Stream for around $100. You can add a microSD card and could actually print normally to a regular printer. No silly proprietary jacks on it. Being a tech guy I like to be able to mess with the o/s. Also thought about Android but not sure how those are with editing documents and printing them.

Lollipop? Thought it was kitkat? Shows what I know, I'm new to droid, I just got a next book 8 tablet with jelkybean wondering if it can or needs to be upgraded, I'm a win is user so android is foreign to me

Jellybean is 4.2
KitKat is 4.4
Lollipop is 5.0

Very few devices are running Lollipop right now.

My tablet (Samsung Galaxy III) is Jellybean
My phone (new as of Wednesday) is an HTC and is on KitKat.

My wife has the iPad. She loves it. Obviously, I like the android environment. The nice thing for each of us is the ability to sync all of our devices. Photos I take with my tablet are almost instantly available on my phone, and vice versa.

My iPad2 with the latest OS upgrade now loads websites at the speed of my old dialup connection. Incredible. It was fine with OS7. Now, you actually have to decide if the probability of the interesting looking website is worth waiting 30 seconds or so to load, if you're lucky enough that it doesn't stall indefinitely. Just like 15 years ago. Many other quirks too. This from Apple.

Nice to hear from insiders on TBN that 8.2 will address this.

Try going to settings > general > reset > reset network settings. Some people had wifi/ network issues during the betas and that helped.

I mainly use mine for surfing the web, and prefer a MacBook Air for portable "work". But I know other people who do everything on their iPad, including creating/editing documents, spreadsheets, graphics, etc. There is actually quite a bit of custom software for business use too.

I think the real question is what do you want to do on an iPad? And then look for apps to enable that.
