You guys are nuts. Gold Rush is an awesome show. The old 91 year old grandpa is my favorite on the show. Quite a character. And watching Tony Beets disassemble that old mining dredge derelict with plans to bring it to his claim and reassemble and use it has got me really looking forward to seeing if it he makes it work. There is a lot of trash on TV but gold rush and Alaska the Last Frontier don't fall into that category. Yes, the folks on Alaska the last frontier have money but the point you're missing is they choose to live their lives the way they do. They don't claim to be 100's of miles from civilization.

Gold Rush lost me in the first season. I was excited to see it and loved that they where running the big equipment, but as it became silly I started searching online to see what was happening and found a lot of posts from locals who where sitting around watching it happen. They said they would redo things over and over again to get what they wanted, which was always to get stuck or damage something. Everything about the show was staged and there was never any goal of actually mining gold, just create a show with as much drama as they could imagine. Having seen those episodes they talked about and wondering why they did what they did, it all made sense knowing it was all staged and done intentionally. I see no reason to believe anything has changed and haven't watched it again.

I used to like watching some of the logging shows, but they quickly deteriorated from showing actual logging/lumberjack stuff to just a bunch of hysterical dopes yarding and winching logs and dropping them on top of machinery or breaking machinery. There were a couple interesting characters (that guy from Louisiana who pulled logs out of the swamps) .

If you're talking about Swamp Loggers, that show was actually set in Southeastern North Carolina, not Louisiana.

Swamp loggers was pretty good. Not enough conflict/drama though, so it got canceled.
There was a show with people pulling logs out of the swamp/river that was set in Lousiana (IIRC they pulled out waterlogged old growth cypress that was cut 50-100 years ago and got stuck in the bottom).

The original underwater logging show was Ax Men. Do you remember S&S Aqua with featuring Jimmy & James Smith? That was some funny stuff!

I used to really enjoy Ice Road Truckers as well. Seems like originally it was 4 or 5 big trucking companies with lots of drivers, but now it's just company A vs. company B. Way more staged drama. OOooooh, dis river crossing looks reaaaaalllly dangerous, I'm gonna stop and tink about it. Well what choice do we have, I'm going for it. Yeah, right.

Is that show still airing? I used to watch it religiously but after 1,000 shots of cracking (but never breaking) ice under the trucks, it became monotonous.

Exactly. Anybody who believes reality shows have anything to do with reality is deluded.

I was really hoping the Hoffman's were not coming back to Gold Rush this year. I much prefer to watch Parker and Tony Beets. Replacing the Hoffman's with Freddy Dodge and Dave Turin would have made for a lot better show.

I still watch American Pickers... one of the few shows you can actually learn something by watching. I think the show has made everyone think their old junk is gold-plated though.

I like watching shows like Pawn Stars, Canadian Pickers, American Pickers, Storage Wars etc because every now and then something comes up that's actually interesting. Most of it is fill so I like to do something else also while the shows are on. I wonder how much "salting" goes on in those show? It seems incredulous that they would find treasure multiple times a show! :D
