..I'll grant you a "maybe"; Also maybe that someone is joking. As the testimony here confirms. Or maybe the customer and cashier are old friends, The point I'm making is you should be left with the uncomfortable impression of: "I don't know." And the first rule of gun handling/hunting is: " If you don't know what you're shooting at, then don't shoot." The mentality of shoot first, ask questions later is wrong. People projecting their scared view of the world that there's a terrorist around every corner is dangerous, they'll see what they want to see.

I have seen nowhere in these posts where anyone even came close to firing a shot.

In a store with other people around and some shouts "Freeze" the best thing is to expect the worse and prepare to react to it, be it draw a weapon, duck and cover or just piss your pants, you better do SOMETHING. After you make the decision is the time to evaluate the situation and decide the next reaction.

To answer: No, I wouldn't whip out a sidearm and dust the idiot for yelling freeze. I'm sure I would have a hand on my sidearm while making a very quick determination of his intent. Point being, he could have gotten himself shot - and - if I'm on the jury - the shooter would walk.

Exactly. And if the kid had of been shot in that state, the judge most likely would have ruled justifiable homicide.

They are trapped and the longer those shows run the more TV drama is injected. The producers want something new to keep the viewers tuning in. Mining became secondary the moment the cameras were turned on. Good example is Deadliest Catch.

Yep, it is on the downhill slope to pure drama - the same way Axmen started out until now it is nothing but fighting. Everytime I click on it to see is maybe they are actually logging there is either a fight going on or someone has just done something stupid and almost got killed. I haven't watched more than 2 minutes of it at a time in 2 years now.

Possibility? Yes...it could have been a possibility the man wasn't joking...it was a possibility he had every intent to rob the store and kill any witnesses.
It's probable that many of the persons in that store would be ready or readying themselves to prevent a crime or defend themselves, rather they had been armed or not...after all, anything can be used as a weapon for self defense.

I don't disagree with that at all Roy. And, I appreciate your usual thoughtful input of under what circumstances you would choose to use your gun.

When a person prepares to and contemplates the use of a gun, they have self-appointed themselves to an exacting position. Anything can happen from being the hero of the day to being charged with homicide. If it goes wrong they shouldn't blame anyone but themselves; the person who appointed them to that exacting position.

When people begin to think in the direction of there being justifiable deadly mistakes that can be blamed on someone else (stupid kid yells Freeze!), that is a very slippery slope.

I don't hate my guns or anyone else's guns. I am sane enough to accept that guns have some unique abilities that can and do lead to some unique challenges. There are many more daily gun homicides, accidental deaths and injuries than heroes. There is no reason to believe that adding more guns to the situation will reverse those statistics.

Without looking it up, my impression is that mandatory training for gun ownership and carry permits can trim the accidental death and injury category on a per capita gun owner basis.
