Not sure about the rental part, mine is set up with a motion detector and as far as I can tell. I only pay for the electric it uses.
Then it would have to be metered and traditionally what is behind the meter is yours, rental lights are not metered because the power company's have already figured out how much electricity a given light is going to use in a 30 day billing cycle, the reason that I asked is I have worked all over this country for different power company's and never had heard of the motion detector streetlight option.

I like the idea of getting some better window shades. Maybe I'm alone here, but it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. It would annoy me some but be honest, do the lights annoy you or is it more of the general rundown look of the property.

No, it is not the appearance of the property, which while unattractive, is just down over the hill enough so that I only see the roof. It is the light, not just in the window, but the light that radiates from the whole place......understand that there is another, identical light no more than 30 feet from the one I take issue with so we're talking a considerable amount of light. I live on a the end of a dead end private dirt road for many reasons, one of them being to enjoy the moon and stars and the darkness - window shades do nothing for that.

You may be correct. It is at least a 1/4 mile down my private driveway to the pole the light is on and the light is on a pole that my outside breaker box and the meter is attached to. With that said, I know that the light was replaced by Clay Electric at least once since I lived here. If it was just the local guys being nice, then Bless them for the service.

Time to take the time to speak with the absentee owner, regardless of how often they are present. See if you can get them to agree to allow you to have the light(s) screened so they don't shine your way while still providing the security their dump needs to keep vandals from setting it on fire. I heard the burning of abandoned camps in your neck of the woods is a real problem these days.:confused3:

Suck it up. It's their property and they can do what they want with it, even if it means 2 lights. Millions of people have lights by their house just like this so you wont' get much sympathy from me. If you dont' like it move to the country and buy enough land so you won't have any close neighbors with lights and junk in their yard. Too many people want to live in a free country yet tell their neighbors how to live.

Time to buy a pellet gun. Untraceable lead shot will take care of the bulbs as fast as the stupid electrical plant manager can put them in.

I'm sorry, but complaining about the neighbors pole lights seems petty to me. Blocking your view of the stars? Is that a real complaint? I'm going to agree, I could see them being annoying but I think I'd let it go. I think the main problem is they used to have shades on them to alleviate the problem and some idiot at the power company won't let them go back up.

I kind of laugh at this thread. People trying to help you over a small problem when there is another thread about someone logging. It seems most people on the thread about logging say its not your property, mind your own business. I guess I advise you against shooting them out, they will catch you at some point. Either keep sticking shades up on your own or go over the guys head at the power company.

Even though I don't agree that you have a big problem, its silly not to put up the shades on the lights since they don't really hurt anything.

I would expect nothing less from a Nub. Glad you aren't my neighbor, I can already tell we wouldn't get along.

Same here, good post. "Their land ends at their property line. Light should not be allowed to shine past that, at least out in the country.

On the subject of light pollution - I'm with you, I moved to the country to enjoy nature and being able to look at the stars is part of that. But then there are people living out here who don't care. I ended my shift at the county jail at midnight back in the 90s, headed home, leaving the small town in the bottom of a canyon it looked like the entire prarie to the north was on fire. I lived that way, As I topped out of he canyon I could see that it was the most glorious Northern Lights I had ever seen. Got home, woke up my wife and called both neighbors told them to get outside, turn off their yard lights and enjoy the show.

They did...for about 5 minutes and then the yard lights came back on. My and my wife sat up until 3 am. Reports next day said they had been visible as far south as the middle tier of states.
