I just can not see a legitimate reason for anybody to be out on your property at that time of night. Either that person is a true imbecile or he is looking to rob you.

Around here - an action such as you describe is a lot more than bold - its just plain idiotic. Chances you will receive high calibre perforations is almost 100%.

I answer my door at night with a handgun. Always one at hand. And something as suspicious as this, I'd dial 911 before even talking to him. Our cops would be on him like white on rice. They take care of the residents.

The later it is the greater the threat. And a LEO would be lit-up himself and be above board.

Hmm, I have been lucky to not live in an area or have a circumstance where a weapon would be warrented to answer a door. As I said, this particular situation was fast moving, as I was about to retire for the evening,

IPAD don;t phone home like ET. ISP do not hand out your IP to just anyone. Usually requires a bit of paperwork. Any LEO would be more professional. This guy was scamming you.
Ipads, iphones, Macs can be located easily via GPS tracking using a simple app. I have found my misplaced iPad using this very useful app. That said, this guy was up to no good.

Only if they are getting a solid communication signal. Wifi also needs to be authenticated with, so.....my area, yeah, not happening.

Just to be clear... His Wifi comment was bogus. The iPad if activated will transmit its coordinates and can be pinpointed was another iOS device registered similarly. Has nothing to do with wifi.

It will transmit IF it has cell connectivity. And connectivity out here, is challenging.

Right now, UPS and FedEx are making deliveries late at night and we're pretty much used to them arriving well after dark. I have lights at both ends of the house that light up the driveway and the area they turn around, so that makes it easy to know who they are. So far I've never had a person show up late at night that didn't have a reason to be here. I have had quite a few drive down the driveway and either say they are looking for a lost dog or trying to find an address. My street has a North and South address with similar numbers for both directions that get bigger the farther you go. They usually think they are on the South section when they pull into my driveway and I tell them this is the North part and it's a 45 minute drive to get to the South part.

My long term goal is to put a gate on my driveway with an automatic opener. I tried just closing it every night, but laziness, weather and my parents living in the house behind me makes it difficult. Have a closed gate would solve the problem.

When somebody shows up, I like to grab a piece of paper and make sure they see me writing down their license plate number.

If I hear a noise outside, I go outside with my pistol in one hand and a spotlight in the other. We have a weird effect with sound and sometimes it sounds like a car is right outside the door, when nothing is there. My driveway is 800 feet long, which amazes me how sound carries sometimes.

I think that having a spotlight in your hands and shining it at the person who claimed to be from DHS would have been the thing to do. You could have shined it in the vehicle and seen if there was anybody else in there. And you could have gotten a good look at the person who claimed to be from DHS. I would think that if he really was an officer from there, he would have been dressed accordingly. If not, that would have been another red flag. Clean clothes that fit and look professional. Most thieves seem to dress the part in my opinion.

The FindMyiPhone app doesn't provide an IP; instead it displays a dot on a map at the location of the iOS device. Your visitor's story was a fake, and you're very lucky the encounter ended as well as it did.

I too have a long driveway: 1300 feet. Electric gate at the top, which I can't see from the house as it's over the top of a hill. The gate stays closed and locked unless I'm going through it or someone has told me that they're coming and I'm home to receive them. It came with hand held clickers that work like an electric garage door opener, and also has a keypad on the outside of the gate. There's a clicker in each car/truck, and in the tank bag on the motorcycle, so there's no longer any need to get out in bad weather or darkness to open the gate.

Before I put the gate in I had a scary experience when a strange car came down the drive with two people in it. I was in the driveway unloading a truck at the time. It stopped about 100 feet from me and one person got out. He was tall, had dreadlock hair, a brightly colored cape, and was holding what looked like a cigarette in his hand. As he got closer I could see it was hand rolled and smoking. It smelled like dope. He walked up the driveway like he owned the place and introduced himself with a Jamaican accent. It seems he used to grow dope in my new-to-me garage (one bay of which had been walled off and insulated, and provided with 220V power), and wanted to know if I wanted to go into business with him. I let him know I wasn't interested, and that the bay was next on my list for tearing out. I also let him know he wasn't welcome on my property, and asked him to let his "friends" know as well. He slowly turned around and the car left. I didn't have the presence of mind to a) go inside and call the Sheriff, b) get the license number of the car, or c) arm myself when I saw the car approaching in the beginning.

Reading through this thread and thinking more about that incident, I don't think I'll be leaving the gate open any longer, and will instead give whoever is coming a one time combo for the electronic lock. I'm also going to install some additional motion activated flood lights along the drive, and warning devices that will set off a chime inside the house when someone goes through the gate. I'm also looking at installing a few cameras, but the complexity and managing the imagery is somewhat daunting, even though I have twenty some years of IT experience. Now I'll be shopping for a spotlight or two. The ability to blind whoever is on the other end seems like a good safety measure and using the one on my shotgun could be unnecessarily hazardous to their health and my freedom.

The only time I ever had someone knock on my door at night was very late and woke me from a sound sleep. Before I opened the door I had every light on inside and out, and both my wife and I were armed. She stayed inside watching with a phone in her hand while I went out to meet what turned out to be local firemen that had come to investigate a burn pile reported by my troublesome neighbor. Now I think if anything like that happens again I'll call the Sheriff to verify that it is legitimate LEO/fire personnel before going outside. At least that way there will be a record of the incident, even if it turns out to be a false alarm.

It also occurs to me that it would be a good idea to have a talk with some of my other neighbors along the lines of arranging mutual aid. The Sheriff is at least thirty minutes away and we have known bad apples around that I'm sure would take advantage if they knew they could get away with it.

We recently had a rash of home invasions in a very nice part of another county. They were targeting Asians and Indian families. The group had driven up from Texas to commit these crimes and are also wanted in other states. I don't expect something like that to happen here, but neither did they. Better safe than sorry. The country is going to **** in a handbag. No respect for law and order, and there appears to be a new attitude that anything goes, just don't get caught.

I don't want to be the guy caught unprepared.
