How many fired off a round or more on New Years at the stroke of midnight?

This is the first year since 2000 that my wife and I made it to midnight. We only did it back then so someone could play the "flip the circuit breakers off to freak people out" joke (remember the Y2K hysteria?). We only made it this year due to my wife doing her Breaking Bad marathon on Netflix. Next year we'll be lucky to make it past 9 PM as usual......

Unless of course your wife starts a Sons of Anarchy marathon on Netflix :)

Chalk us up as the boring, non-shooting crowd. Not a huge advocate of wasting ammo. I'm fickle like that.

Next 4th of July I should post and ask how many folks shot off fireworks. I wonder what comments that will bring?

How about asking who shot off fireworks on New Years eve? ;)

That's one of the days its legal here. :thumbsup:

It could be worse. What if everyone shot arrows into the air at night....run Forrest, run!

We did that as kids with home-made bows. The arrows were sticks. didn't think anything of it because we didn't know any better. Sticks only went about 100' up, turned around and stuck into the dirt a few inches. Then some kid brought out his older sister's "real" target bow and some arrows. He shot that thing up and we immediately realized the gravity (no pun intended) of the situation, as we lost site of the arrow in the blink of an eye. We ran like heck under the overhang and waited for what seemed like forever, and a few seconds later the arrow came down near where we shot if from and went about a foot into the ground. Never did that again. :eek:

Boys, come on over to me place. I'm gonna build a fire, we'll roast marshmallows, hold hands and sing Kumbahyah. Don't bring ye guns.
What if the marshmallows are packin?

When I was 18 I bought a nice Hoyt bow. My dad was an avid archer, but shot with his fingers. I had my bow set up for a release and being younger I naturally had my draw weight set higher than him. Well he had to raise the bow a little to draw it, and not being used to a release... the first time he tried to draw it he had it almost all of the way back and released it at about a 30 degree angle. :laughing: I think the neighbor's tree stopped it. It's funny to think about now and I still give him a hard time for it, but it could have turned out bad!

You know... why didn't I think of that? We watched (from a very safe distance of course), far away neighbors launching mortar rounds, I mean fireworks (guessing 2in diameter at least) after dark up to midnight on NYE. Oh the humanity or is it insanity!

Firing a gun at midnight (into the ground, of course ;) ) just to hear it go BANG?? Not me.

Perhaps a "song" would be safer?

The Arrow and the Song
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

This thread is becoming depressing to me. Who said anybody shot off rounds into the air? I'm saddened by the number of replies to this effect when the only reason to make such a reply is to fabricate this in your minds. I guess it's human nature to read into something you want to believe and ignore what is actually there. I see this with clients from time to time and understand that the biggest hurdle in communication is what the other person imagines is being said.

I live out in the country, I shoot my guns day and night. Night hunting is legal here for a variety of animals. Target shooting any time of the day or night is legal. And yes, during the dark hours of the night, I have been know to pull out the guns and set up a target. I have lights out side and we can clearly see what we are aiming at. I guess for those of you who do not have lights outside your homes, shooting at night time wouldn't make any sense. Assuming that those of us who have shot guns at night do not have lights, does not make any sense.

If my backstop is the same during the day as it is at night, what is the difference? If you are commenting about somebody who shoots at night, why do you assume that he or she is being unsafe? I know a lot of rifle ranges have night shooting. They also have lights so you can see at night!!!

Eddie

Eddie....although the original post did not say he shot off rounds.....the implication he does fire off rounds by saying it's his New Years ritual is most certainly there.........like I said earlier.......just a bad habit that people should not do. Target practice.....as long as done safely is a great sport and activity.:thumbsup:

I never mix gunpowder with alcohol. Doing so has greater risks to safety than walking naked into a pen full of hungry wild boars.
