I am crying inside a little bit hearing about Walnut being used as firewood.

I think a better idea is to have it milled up and then sell it on craigslist. It's worth $$$

+1

Especially if it has nice figure.

I'd say 8' would be pretty standard. Depending on your local market, it might be wise to have them 3" thick or so in case they are good for gunstocks.

That's what the M1 Garand stock is made out of. American Black Walnut.

Yes I know stocks are made out of walnut just didn't think of my log being used for that.

I looked at the log a few minutes ago. May still be useable for a saw log!

Sounds good. Did it make nice boards?

I still have that log in the picture in my log pile. Maybe I could still get it milled. It's been sitting for about 2 years on the log stack. I actually need to make a wrap around mantle so maybe I could use it?! Any idea if I could saw mill an old log like that? I need to see if it has any rot.

Yes, very nice. I hope to make some furniture, cutting boards, etc... with it soon.

The interesting thing about walnut is that when you cut it live, there is a pronounced creamy sapwood and dark heartwood (pretty much like vanilla/chocolate). But as the cut log ages, the color evens out to a single purple-brown shade throughout. This increases the yield of the desirable dark wood compared to milling right away. Some lumber mills will steam their walnut logs to accelerate this coloring process, so they can saw the logs sooner and get more dark wood.

I learned all that by accident, simply by letting the logs sit around before having a chance to mill. When we sawed into the first log, I kept expecting to see the sapwood/heartwood division, but it never showed! That's when I did some reading and learned how the color evens out over time.

Interestingly, the final color of walnut keeps changing after the cut board dries and seasons, darkening and taking a deeper purple-brown tone over time. I will be interested to see what it looks like after drying for the past year.

Here's a pic of the log as I was milling boards off:

Beautiful. I agree that burning black walnut as firewood is a cryin' shame. Like burning money.

That's really pretty! Yes I've noticed the purple color on some smaller wood I have split. Just gorgeous!

Well thanks to you all I have decided to get it milled! Need to talk with sawmill next. Pretty excited about it. I'll post pics. Lol
