rather than using bolts, could you use some sort of pin that would facilitate removal and re-installation? Or would that leave things too loose?

The removal/replacement of the bolts (only 2) is quick and easy, I've popped mine off to use my clamp on pallet forks and reattach it quickly.

I always figured those were more expensive than that. That is not a bad price, with no shipping delivered to your door by the brown truck.
Yeah that is a heck of a price! They are usually quite a bit more but I think these are cheaper as they are limited in their depth capability. I think I'm going to order them if still available.

I have to work with people that have that "step up 1/8" or 1/4" each time mentality. The result is a ton of 1/2"-1" chisel point bits that have chipped/busted/cracked cutting edges right out at the edge. Some people just refuse to learn.
I have (had?) that mentality - not because I refuse to learn but because I didn't know any better - until this post.

It's the 1st I've heard about 'how it should be done'. And yes, I chipped two 3/4" bits doing it from a 1/2" pilot hole. Pissed me off, those were expensive bits.

Thanks for the advice.

Yep. Proper way is to only pilot big enough to clear the chisel point. If you have split point bits, no pilot is even needed.

I go automatic center punch. Then with a 5/8 chuck Ingersoll rand air drill. Great control at the start to avoid a wandering bit and full speed seems to be just right with cutting oil.

Best part? If the bit binds it just stalls the air drill instead of breaking your knuckles.

I have never had ANY luck pilot drilling and stepping up...

And it helps if you stop a pilot hole just before it breaks thru. Then fill it with cutting oil and go with the big bit.
