Roy is this the older type 4520- or the new Utility type. where the cap is below the surface level and all plastic.
If new Utility maybe cross threaded. just brute force may loosen.

It's a 2005 model, so I'd say it's the older type. I believe the change model year was 2009.

Roy mine is a 2008 and JD must of been ashamed of fuel cap so buried it in hole under a flap lid that catches dust and dirt blocking the drain hole then hard to get hand into hole to remove cap.
And brute force to remove .
Also encourages a spill by blocking a funnel or container nozzle from working properly. not every one has a refueling sta. on level concrete floor and service station nozzles. mine most likely is a 5 gal. container sitting on top of steering wheel for support holding fill nozzle in or near fuel hole.

My 4300 has fuel cap under the hood flap lid, and it has not been a problem either with debris (what little accumulates can be easily wiped clean) and the No-spill 5 gal fuel container has a side handle, is square shaped, and rests neatly on the hood with the nozzle in the tank for filling. Any drips or spillage ends up under the lid, not running over the painted hood. I like that feature.

Maybe if Roy can fashion a board with a couple bolts extended at the right locations to fit the finger holds of the cap (if they are grooved out like the 4300 ??) or a stick for leverage with a short belt to act like a filter wrench (tightens as it turns) would get the cap loose.

I got it loose with a big channel-lock pliers. Didn't take much...just a bit more leverage. I tightened it after refueling, but didn't go nuts with torquing it down.

My 4400's fuel cap, like Beenthere's, is under a door. I had to get that one with a big channel-lock once...

Cleared about 8-10 inches of snow off the drive. There are things I really like about this 4520, but there are things I don't like as much as the 4400. It's definitely been worked harder the my 4400 and it doesn't seem like 30% more power. That's a very subjective "seat of the pants" feel and I could be way off. But, boy....does this thing shift nicely. The 4400 gear and range levers always felt like a VW Beetle gearshift...springy. The 4520's gear and range levers are very positive.

Roy,
You could try a little vaseline or grease on the threads of the cap to help prevent this in the future.

Roy,
I was looking in JD parts, and I can't find anything that indicates that the fuel cap/fuel door changed in the 4x20's. I thought they all had fuel doors. Is it possible that yours was removed because it interfered with your aftermarket cab?

Possibility...can't say I ever looked at 4x20 series tractors that closely...
