I'm not leaving my 'castle'

Someone entering my castle without permission isn't there to help me...
Just to be clear, my instructor didn't say that you couldn't use deadly force, even shooting thru the door if need be. He just said that the best course of action is to remove yourself from the scene, call 911 on your cell and let the professionals handle it. If that is not possible, find a room with one access (bathroom is likely best) and hole up in it with your favorite defense weapon and cell phone. Do not in any case go looking around the house trying to find the culprit. That almost guarantees that you will be injured or killed by the intruder. Let him (them) come to you and then you are prepared to shoot at the only spot that they will be coming into, the doorway.

Folks can say all they want about "blowing the perp away", but in reality, one has to live with the fact of taking a human life for the rest of his life. IF you can do that without after thought, then by all means open up on the invader with your 5000 round per minute gatling gun, 12 ga. shotgun loaded with 00 buck, or whatever you have to protect yourself and clean up the blood and gore later.

By the way, 7 1/2 shot is plenty deadly for home protection from 15-20 feet away, it is just like solid lead but doesn't keep going thru walls into neighbors house like buckshot will. When I had 3 mongrel dogs break into my property and went on rampage killing anything they could catch, #8 shot from my Mossberg took them out from up to 40 feet away like they were shot with a cannon. They would be really nasty at 15 feet on a human body.

I think someone earlier mentioned the 21 foot rule when confronting someone with an edged weapon (knife) and according to my research, that rule only applies to someone with a holstered gun. If you have your weapon in hand, which you should have, you have plenty of time to put 2 or more rounds dead center before the perp can reach you. I would treat anyone with any weapon the same way whether it be knife, baseball bat, crowbar etc. and have my weapon in hand and pointed at them.

If they had a gun, then I think, shoot first is the only way to handle that situation. The old cop show standby where the cop puts down their gun because the perp has a hostage is total BS also. NO ONE in their right mind is going to give up their weapon to an armed assailant and hope to live. My reply is to place deadly aim at the perp and tell him to do what he wants, after he shoots the hostage, he is a dead man so what is his choice but to surrender. If the opportunity presents itself, one bullet between the eyes of the perp stops all muscle reaction also.

Same thing applies to a perp getting in your car and saying drive. DONT do it, hastily remove yourself from the car is the only way to have a chance to survive. Driving to a remote location pretty much assures that you will be killed. If you are in a busy parking lot, they aren't going to risk shooting in most cases and if the do, chances are that they will miss.

Doesn't sound wise to hole up in most bathrooms unless you have beforehand taken the time to stack sand bags high around your commode. You may end up like Pistorius' girlfriend.

This is not to say that laying in wait for the bad guy to step in front of your muzzle isn't a good plan, in many situations it is. Waiting for or relying upon police response may not be. Police response time is far too variable, even more so in rural areas. Though an active intruder situation will have your call high on their priority list. Just remember the old saying, "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.".

I tell you it's hard to wait and not clear the house yourself. Last summer we came home to a wide open front door. We had had some trouble with with my daughters boyfriend. So when I got out this was the first thing on my mind. I entered the house and checked each room downstairs. By that time my wife had disobeyed orders and come in the house with our grandson. We live in a typical 2 story colonial with a walk up attic. By the time I made it to th attic and back down she was in the hall bath. I blocked off the attic door in case I had missed someone. While standing at the top of the steps talking to my wife the lights went out. I stuck my pistol in the holster grabbed a short barreled shotgun and flashlight. I told my to call the police. I was thinking they had been outside waiting and now they had us penned up inside they cut the breakers off in the garage. I made it down the steps and out the front door around the house to a vehicle. I thinking police on the way but the invaders are in the house with wife and grandson. With no neighbors to see if their lites are on and no dusk to dawn lites it was dark in the yard. Tried calling the wife no answer. So I made a rush for the garage door. Flung the door open like they show you on tv. No shots so stepped in ready. Still nothing. So I made it cautiously in the house. I started screaming to my wife. She answered everything's ok. So I went up got them outside. By the time the police showed up I had the guns safely out of site but still convenient and I was on my second beer.

I can tell you that was a frightening time especially when I was outside hunkered down away from family. The pounding throat and headache. When the police pulled up we told them what was going on. Turns out somebody had hit a pole and we had lost power. They attributed the open door to us leaving it open. Several weeks later we found my farm dog when left inside can open a door with the paddle style handles on them.

In my home I'm not going to do anything that leaves me or my family in anything but the best possible survivable position.... hiding in a closet hoping the perp goes away is NOT in my plan...

Yea i dont dare load Defense ammo. I have never had a fail to fire or anything, but i want to make sure that crimp is strong and the case is in spec and the powder stays dry etc, if i ever need it!!!!!

I like the xds but i think i will end up buying the M&P but i know it dosent come in .45 i dont think?

The S&W MP in .45cal is the front runner for the U.S.Military...crazy Gov. going from the .45 to the 9MM and back to the .45.A move the never should have done(going to the 9MM)
You should try the XD's;they are great guns,I have one in 9MM and another in ..40S&W.

The M&P 45 is really NICE! Best pistol I have ever shot and it has been the most accurate for me. Light yet heavy enough to take powerful rounds. Pretty sure I have put some +Ps through the M&P. I really like it.

Don't clear a house by yourself. There is no need to go into a house if your family is not in said house. Stay out. Call 911. Let the POlice do what needs to be done.

A friend of mine was working one night and got a rape in progress call. The location was not in his jurisdiction but the two agencies had mutual support agreements so he went to the call. He beat other units to the location and the woman ran outside and said the rapist was still inside. What he should have done was stay outside with the victim, set up a perimeter, and guide in the other units before clearing the house. Instead, my friend went inside and was shot in the head by the rapist.

The rapist was hiding in a closet and shot the officer as he went by. My friend survived but it was not pretty.

again ...back to reloading.

had the day off so i reloaded 200 rounds of 9mm and 100 rounds of .45.

it does take some time to clean the brass and reload. while i was waiting for brass to get clean and tumbled, i stripped my pile of left over copper wire. Their paying $2.00 per pound for clean wire, so im off tomorrow with 110 pounds of the stuff to cash out . still have more to strip....but sick and tired of doing it. The smaller 12 Ga wire i m just going to scrap while still in the plastic jacket. their paying .75 per pound for it dirty, and its just too much effort to strip.

im going to take that cash and head out to cabelas...they have a sale going on reloading supplies at the moment......win win

I dunno, I think I'd strip the 12g stuff too if the diff is 1.25/#

Where do you get your scrap copper wire? We get ours from the left over bits on alarm installations, so it's all small stuff - though there's a lot of it, as we mostly installed "hard wired" systems rather than wireless - better for the customer. Some of those alarm installations are protecting school buildings and their roofs, where the bad guys like to pull wiring out of conduit, for HVAC etc. For the staggering amount of damage they do (which is paid for by the taxpayers of course), compared to the relatively paltry amount they get for copper scrap, they should ought'a be shot on sight. And to steer this back towards topic, reloads should be okay to use for that :c).
