..sodamo, the bearing and bolt shops around here really try to take advantage with their pricing, but usually they have what's needed in stock and the few dollars extra isn't going to break the bank. But when the price is almost triple and the situation isn't urgent, I'll use the Internet every time, too. Best of all worlds when you can do the job yourself and save money on parts at the same time, isn't it? ... /QUOTE]

So true!!! I was quite fortunate in that our guest staying here at the time had much more experience and knowledge on the subject than I due to his work and even before I was ready to go to town he had researched the availability and costs online even giving me a tutorial on the choices available. I surely don't mind paying a reasonable premium for immediate availability, but not in this case. I could let the grass grow a few more days.

None yet. We fed the birds (and squirrels :laughing:) through the winter at our old house. The houses were more and closer together there and the birds definitely knew what a bird feeder was. The first time I hung up a feeder there, the birds were on it before I got back into the house. Birds are amazingly observant I've noticed. I haven't fed the birds here for the past 4-5 years. I think it will take a while for them to show up. Blue Jays, Chickadees, Woodpeckers and Nuthatches are what I expect. Nuthatches have been pretty scarce lately though. Cardinals are more open field or edge dwellers than forest birds and there are no grain fields around here. The area grass hay fields are under 2' + of snow, so nothing for birds there now.

Dave, they are indeed. And they come to expect it.

We have a habit of feeding our dogs breakfast, usually out doors behind the kitchen. Their normal dog food ration (meal of last resort) and water bowl are located in the exercise room off the master suite. Breakfast is always some form of people food, anything from the same as we had or leftovers from another meal or restaurant trip. Every morning a variety of birds show and scout in anticipation. Our dogs are quite aware apparently and have become less than neat eaters, always leaving a variety of rice or other non meat items on the concrete after having their fill. Once the dogs have exited the immediate area the birds return and clean up.

I have a rope suspended from the main beam at the front of the house from which I hang bananas. Once sufficiently ripe it becomes a bird feeder of sorts with our feathered friends claiming the topmost fruit as we pick from the bottom.

Good Afternoon. 1315, sunny, 69F with 54% humidity. Forecast high of 69F with 0% chance of rain this afternoon, and a low of 49F tonight. I've got my cardio in, plus me and Margie went for a walk. The guys are working on the pinestraw this morning. Margie made a comment about what they must think of us walking for exercise when they get more exercise than anyone would want every day of their lives. I found a couple of nice plastic trash cans that were thrown in the woods with deer scraps in them. I dumped them out and will pick them up in a couple of weeks. I also got the garden cut up today. If I have very many more warm days like today, I'm going to take a chance and start planting.

Hope everyone has a good day. {for more pinestraw pictures, including a couple of green tractors, go to TODAY'S SEAT TIME}

Kyle, I have repaired my 2" water line with those and one actually started leaking after a few years, but the other two are holding -so I have had mixed results. Now when I repair mine I unearth about 20' pick the line up and use a standard coupling - no rubber bushings to wear out.

Todays water leak was where the cement box around the meter rubbed through a metal nipple 1/2" from a reducer - had to replace from the meter to outside the box -including a shutoff valve and reducer. We also used a dresser coupling that my dad already had.

Kyle, in about 2 weeks will be the prime potato planting time. I need to grab some onions also.

I wish I had some of your sand for planting potatoes. I keep planting, using various methods, and still not much if any success.

Onions are in. Bought some strawberry root sets. Quinone and Allstar I think? Trying to get the kiddos interested in it more.

Don, are you using fireplace ashes on your spuds? I don't think mine have any eyes sprigging out yet.

GM, oops,GA all...was warming up fast and the 15" of snow was melting and the temp took a sharp drop and now I am worried about another ice storm. Fiance and I have finalized the guest list at 55 maximum total, now sending out "Save The Date" postcards and trying to work with the estimate from the reception hall...their price wants to approach $3500 total, my budget says $2500 total...will work with them as needed but all you guys know I am a stubborn and opinionated old geezer so guess who will prevail in the long run? Old farts have the experience and patience to wear down the younger folks....and we have the $$$ to back up our opinions....:laughing:

Hey...if you guys here on TBN had told me three years ago I would be as happy as I am today, I would have told you that you were nuts....:laughing:

Yes I am, well will, I haven't bought them yet Mom says to plant them after Presidents Day. I don't want them coming up too soon and then freezing off. My sand does stay cooler and they do sprout latter anyway, but if a freeze comes in March and the potatoes are up I just throw hay on them and move the hay back after the freeze.

46F and a slight drizzle ... temps headed down through the overnight ...

Just got back from picking up another load of shagbark hickory @ Bobbi's

Had to take the roads this time ... with the weather as warm as it has been, the trail through the woods is likely impassable ... not going to chance getting stuck.
