As title says, can a landscape rake be used for light cultivating or would it be better to get a spring tooth harrow to be an
E to dig a bit more and deal with the chattering for light surface work gathering leaves and branches etc
Thanks

Swapping one for the other is kind of like pounding a nail with a pair of pliers.

I agree with bigtiller. A landscape rake is not intended for cultivation and is not going to dig in like a spring tooth harrow. And a spring tooth harrow is going to be useless for gathering leaves. Horses for courses.

That's what I was afraid of. Too bad they don't still make the spring tooth jobs like they used to WAY back,I could still get away with one piece of equipment. Thanks

Spring Tooth Harrows are available new and used in every format from light duty to industrial strength. You just need to search the web. Here is an industrial strength Spring Tooth/Spike Harrow:

Why not add your location to your T-B-N profile? Someone will advise you where a selection of STHs are available IF THEY KNOW YOUR LOCATION.

Boy, I don't know guys. I have a completely different opinion. Just because I wanted to give it a try, I took my landscape rake and removed every 3 tines. In other words, I left 1, removed 3, left another 1, removed 3 etc...... It worked pretty darn good! Dug in nice, no wadding up around the tines. Granted, not the same as a real cultivator, but if you've got one lying around and don't want to drop any more cash on another implement, it'll work pretty good.

It sounds to me like you just turned a rake into a harrow rather than a cultivator.

the OP wants to turn a rake into a cultivator,,,, or

a harrow into a rake.

These 3 tools do 3 completely different things.
