Thanks HEC,
I priced coal at the hardware store yesterday and it is $399 per ton for anthracite nut coal. The store says that it will be readily available in the future. The DS stove and furnaces are reportedly good at burning both fuels very well but I have not seen one other than on the web.
So, you burn coal exclusively, and it seems to work for you. Tell me, what size are you heating, and how much coal are you using? I thought with both fuels I might be able to switch over to meet low and high demands.
I only burn coal and use about 5 ton per year heating a 1450 sq. ft. cape . It also keeps my uninsulated basement 60 plus degrees , depending on how cold it gets . My house is 25 years old and not the best windows for sure. I also live in an open area where we get lots of wind . I set the temp at 71 and it stays that way all winter with baseboard heating . Coal up here is $300/ton delivered bulk , $400 seems quite high , you might want to check around . Bag coal is just slightly higher by the pallet . I get my coal from Center Farms , not sure if they could drop you off some on the way up north or not as they haul their own from PA. . You would need a way to unload the pallets I would imagine.
