ran the tractor when it was snowing very hard, parked it for the nite, went out the next day turned the key on everything on the dash lite up like usual, but it didn't crank over all the lights work, once in awhile I would have to giggle the shifter to get it to start. any suggestions?

Sure sounds like the safety cutout switch on the shifter/transmission. If you have the shop manual, or parts manual, you might be able to find a spot where you can bypass the switch to get you through until you can get it fixed properly.

Who told you that? What did 'they' say it was? Why ask here if you've already been told what it is?:confused2:

I read something on here that is was a potentiometer that has 5 volts going through the shifter switch, and you cant bypass it like a normal switch

And he is correct. Check battery voltage and clean and check your grounds.

I don't know where the switch is located, its to cold (-6 out) to go out there and start working on it! I'm hoping this weekend it gets up to the mid 20's and I can go out to look at it.

I did check the voltage and that was fine, I hope to check the connections this weekend.

The "range selector" lever is read by a potentiometer, (similar to a switch, but it reads a scale from 0 to 5 Volts, rather than just on/off).
If you move the range selector to the forward neutral position, does it start? Sometimes the pot may have a dead spot, but either neutral position should allow it to start, IF it's working correctly.
