Oil Change time

I think I understand that you may switch the Honda to Dino oil. A friend just bought a 2012 CRV. I heard the salesman tell her the car comes with synthetic and change it at 7500. I haven't dug into the manual but if calls for synthetic I wouldn't switch it.

A side question. If someone, particularly a woman, gets an oil change at a shop. How can they be assured that they are really getting synthetic?

We have a 12 Pilot and the recommended weight oil is only available as Semi-syn. Check your book it may be the same

We also have a 07 GMC Duramax that rarely gets driven and I only change oil/filter in it when the MM is at 10% regardless of time dino Rotella

That's one reason that many of us prefer to change our own.

In a quick lube, unless you hear/see them "crack" the seal on a bottle of synthetic in front of you, you don't really know for sure.

If you drop a vehicle at a Mom/Pop garage (bays are tucked away), it's pretty much on trust. Some places are OK, some aren't.

Other than doing it yourself, another option is to take your own synthetic oil and filter into a Mom'n Pop, and pay them cash to change it for you, while you stand there. If you have a handy neighbour, cash or beverage of choice works well there too.

Long way of saying..... if you find a commercial shop you can trust, it's worth a lot more than the total on the bottom of an oil change bill.

I change the oil (Mobil 1) in my pickup about every 3 or 4 years, as I only put about 2,500 miles/yr on it. We both hate it and only drive it when we need a pickup.
Ralph

(Sorry Gary, I've just gotta ask....)

Ralph - I keep wondering....... Given how easy a low-mile Toyota p/u would be to sell, why do you still have it ?

Why not sell it and throw the money in a bank acct ? Between that and insurance savings, you could probably rent brand-new trucks for 20+ years, and still have cash sitting there.

Not picking on ya, :drink: , it's just you've posted on this before, and I've been scratching my head on this one.

We/I need a pickup every once in a while. That's why I still have it. There's currently no pickup that I'd want. They're all big pieces of crap, all heavier than the 3,500 # one I have. Can at least get diesels now in a little smaller pickup. Dodge one is 4,500 #, and Chevy/GMC ones are 3,900 # are are BIG monsters. Could possibly get a clamp-on-the-back single or two wheel trailer to go on the back of the Jetta, but they're a problem then to use. The Tacoma's tonneau is a dream to use compared to previous ones.

Wish I'd bought a 2006 Baja in their last years made. Somehow, they didn't appeal to me then.

I change my own oil on everything of mine. I reminded her to look for the oil spec and I would change it. But who knows what she will do on the spur of the moment.

i thought they recomended that use the oil monitor or 1 year? I would not want it to sit that long in there my self. I would change at 6-9000 miles or a littler over a year myself whichever is first.

My work truck a 12 chevy colorado i5 enginge just turned on the oil change notice at 9800 miles. i do mostly highway miles but i am a forester so there is ideling in the woods 4wd and lots of acceleration when i get going. Not i do VERY little city stop and go miles. But they do spec a semi syn oil in these trucks so i dont feel were past the realm of possibility on the oil life. and i drive about 17000 a year on this truck so i get one or two changes a year on it so i dont worry about the condestion etc, plus its driven daily.

Motown, they do make quality filters that last more than 5000 miles, but like you said if you like to go long time on oil like if you use amsoil long drain or Mobil 1 extended you can always use a good filter and drop it half way through at like 5-10k and top off and keep going. but new motors have better tolerances and engine metals and better air filtration and fuel management there is not the contaminets that were in a car 30 years ago.

I was wrong. I thought only Filippinos don`t make the maintanance. I am a beliver in syntetic oils, I dissabled a lot of engines with high milage running with it and they looked like new. Only for a new enginge for the break in it is not good.
Alex

What about engines with factory fill Syn oil??? The engineers must accept the break in or else they would not factory fill with syn and use dino and say at 5000 or whatever we recomend mobil 1 or penzoil full syn

Oil starts evaporating it's additives package as soon as the container is opened. For this reason and the acids in the oil from carbon it's recommend yearly.

It kills me someone will buy an expensive piece of equipment and then skimp on maintenance. Spend $25,000 on a tractor then won't spend $25 to change the oil.

I agree. The last 5 vehicles I have bought came with Synthetic in them. Three manufacturers can't all be wrong.
