Fuel goes thru a high pressure fuel pump (HPFP), pressure is just under 30,000psi. It then goes directly to the injectors which are controlled electronically instead of mechanically. More precise fuel delivery and higher atomization due to the high pressure.

I'm sure someone can give a better technical explanation.

My only concern with the common rail system is the poor quality of diesel fuel in the US. The high pressure fuel pump uses the fuel as lubrication. SCAR ratings (or the fuel lubricity rating) typically are far worse in the US than Europe. Although not large numbers compared to sales this has been a problem at times for automotive engines. Water has been the biggest problem, the HPFP grenades due to lack of lubrication. I hope these engines have a good water separator.

Common rail has nothing to do with emissions that I am aware of. Maybe more fuel efficient but not enough to meet tier 4 emissions. My truck had a common rail but still needed DPF and regens to meet emission standards. The rep I spoke to at the Louisville show said that the new engines were built by LS. He was from the LS headquarters in NC.

The Mahindra common rail design requires no DPF to meet Tier 4 requirements. And I would assume this is what most other brands will move to.

That's a tough call, for a couple of reasons. I think most companies will go with a common rail system because they're more efficient, both from a fuel economy, and emissions standpoint, but emissions stuff is a tossup. Moving to a system the way Mahindra did with the DOC, EGR and CCV is going to increase the cost of the machines over what a DPF does, and the investment from the manufacturer's standpoint is pretty high. I think that one article said they spent $30M to retool for the new system..ouch.

Nice simple explanation of the different tier 4 sysyems. Biggest question i have is the new class of engine oil....

I believe that is the same oil they have been using in the diesel trucks for the past several years, nothing "new". You just can't put any old oil in there.

Yeah I googled it after I posted. Safe to also assume you wouldnt be able to use #1 home heating oil as an alternate fuel in a pinch like you can in the older engines..
