Fence off an acre at a time and get some pigs to root them out on a five year plan?

I feel like I need to hide that comment so my fiance doesn't see it. She's slowly trying to turn the place into a zoo as it is....

Ask the logging company to push them over as part of their logging agreement. This way the stumps are already pulled up for you even if they leave them there when cutting. Then all you have to do is move stumps and then level the land afterward.

Your situation may be a bit different as you want to clear the land. WE only did pre-commercial thinning. Clearing would be easier in a sense. But presumeably the loggers want the trees, right? They wouldn't want to leave four feet of the highest value of the tree standing. Not to mention, I am not sure the harvester could negotiate four foot stumps, or the forwarders.

Sure a dozer could just move everything out of the way when the loggers are done, but then you are left with one god awfull pile of everything imaginable! Maybe, if you just want to make pasture and not run a plow through the ground in your life time , a forestry mulcher on a tracked skid loader may be the best option, but still $$$$$!

Most logging companies and sawmills will reject any log that has the flared end still attached. It's for this reason that the loggers will cut the tree off at DBH....diameter at breast height. Any stump remaining below the DBH line will actually cost the loggers money.

My stumps were all cut a foot or so off the ground. Half of them went for colored landscaping chips, so I would imagine they would take anything for that. I had them thin some of my landscaped areas, since with their cool toys, they could do in minutes what it would take me a week, and these stumps I cut off and ground with a Big Vermeer 665B stump cutter I had at the time. Then repaired the terain. That was maybe a hundred stumps, and that was already a job and 5/8!

For me, too. What tree species are you talking about?

I'm not a logger, but I have never seen loggers follow that practice in my area. We have SYP and mixed hardwoods (oak, yellow poplar, etc.).

I would get a trac-hoe after the loggers are done and just have him grub the stumps out. Than you can play with the stumps as you have time. He should be able to do a lot of them in a couple hours/

When the excavator did the ones he did for me, he left craters and all the ends of the roots were a big mess!
